The Planet Fitness gym in Richmond, California is standing behind their dress code policy after one member claimed that she was told to put a shirt over her intimidatingly toned body.
As reported by KTVU Channel 2, Tiffany Austin was recovering from a car accident and getting back in shape with her first workout at the gym. However, her time exercising was cut short when a Planet Fitness employee stopped her. Austin explained, She says, you know, Excuse me, we've had some complaints. You're intimidating people with your toned body. So can you put on a shirt?
Ms. Austin was wearing a spaghetti strap tank top and capri pants with her midriff exposed, and she doesnt think her attire was out of line. I dont feel like its anything crazy, but I mean you tell me if its burning your eyes, Austin said with a laugh. Reportedly she was only told that the gym dress code prohibited wearing string tank tops. The Planet Fitness customer agreed to wear one of the shirts the gym provides patrons for free, but while she waited for the tee, another employee approached her with objections to her clothing. Feeling harassed and intimidated herself, Austin decided to get her money back and cancel her membership at the gym advertised as the Judgement Free Zone whose policy bans gymtimidation. McCall Gosselin, Planet Fitness spokesperson, said that criticizing Austin for being toned,
is not in line with the Planet Fitness policy whatsoever.

Reason #278 why California sucks.
I guess I don’t know what ‘toned’ means. If it means have a soft tummy, then yeah - she’s toned.
This is just asking for a lawsuit and given that the target is a member of a protected class, they will be paying her to come back along with the EEOC and her attorneys if she wants to go that route.
She was making the good personality women feel bad.
I smell bs, lawsuit, and idiocy. If that is toned, then Obama is a Conservative. It is possible the manager was telling her to put on a shirt because she was not toned and offending others and tried to do it without telling her she was fugly.
I’m ok with this. I spend plenty of time at the gym and I don’t see anyone dressed like that. It’s also part of the gym policy as many people are paranoid about using a machine covered with sweat. You’re supposed to wipe everything when you’re done.
I think it’s stupid that she and the media are making a thing over it. Put on a friggin shirt, shut up and keep working out. No one is infringing on your right to exercise.
As common sense evaporates, lawsuits increase.
I bet it was a bunch of chubby woman. lol.
I’m wondering whether all this complaining was, as they carefully pretended, aesthetic or moral, or whether maybe it was racist.
You have simply got to be sh*tting me. She’s not that toned anyway. What kind of world are they creating?
Or more generally, "You breath air at our pleasure, not at yours.
This is just asking for a lawsuit and given that the target is a member of a protected class,
Typically I don’t like these lawsuits, but it appears she should go right along and get as much money as possible from these idiots.
Some of them have very little in the way of free weights. Good luck finding a squat rack & similar equipment. Others kick you out if you grunt too loud. Still others are fond of offering pizza & cookies at the front desk as a "reward".
Their appeal seems limited to the crowd that does not want to try too hard.
dunno about tone, but that looks like a fairly dark hue
I’d hit it too; twice for good measure.
She can intimidate me any time she wants..........................
Their business model is that they’re not a place for muscleheads and gymbunnies. There are a lot of places for them and there’s a certain group of potential customers that don’t feel comfortable at those places. Those are the customers Planet Fitness is trying to get. It’s their “Unique Selling Point” as they say in marketing. They’re upfront about the fact and feature it in their advertising, so it’s not unexpected that they would actually, you know, deliver on what they’ve promised their customer.
That may be “toned” at a fatty farm but not where I come from.
If she is told that she is too toned, she should take it as a compliment, put the dang t-shirt on and continue working out. If she was intimidating others, I shutter to think what the other female patrons looked like. And yes, it was definitely a female complaining because, believe me, there is no man in the world who would complain about a woman being overly toned...
Must get EXPERT OPINION.......................
I like the one with Sean Astin but this is truer to the short story.
Wait, cover up in California? This is a new one.
That’s exactly what I was thinking when I saw her picture. It depends on what you’re definition of “toned” is. I think it’s a rouse to get attention, myself.
I would rather look at a toned person then a fat slob.
She is looking for a payday
At my gym she would be average in looks, body tone, and attire.
Same thing I was going to say “That’s toned?”
In the future, no one will be better.
Everyone will be worse.
Kalifornicia... say no more.
well, I would say that this woman is attractive, and easy on the eyes.
I’ve seen more skimpy outfits at my gym. But I don’t know their particular dress code. Just saying, this outfit doesn’t seem too skimpy to me. But then females working out may have different opinions of this other female.
I believe this is the entire movie.
Compared to Moochelle, it is.
I’ve been to a few women’s gyms where the woman working there to assist with the workouts is a fat slob. I didn’t think it was good advertisement for the program, but I thought maybe they were afraid of discrimination suits if they didn’t hire them.
So maybe they didn’t want to intimidate the clientele? That just doesn’t make any sense. People should look at someone in good shape as motivation.
I agree. Woman at the gym can be catty. Most of the rich woman can look at her and be nasty because they are so frumpy.
Would hate to see the complainers...
I think the tone was referring to her skin tone...
I dunno. I see a little pooch around the tummy.
But would Sir Mix-a-Lot approve?
Expect an executive action soon. We have to be equal!
I wonder if she is an aspiring actress, or is planning a fitness video, and figures this is a good way to promote herself...
Oh, the complainers? Well, they’re the same fat ugly folks who replaced the pretty airline stewardesses.
i think there is probably more to this story
