Gym tells woman to cover up because her ‘toned body’ intimidated others

The Planet Fitness gym in Richmond, California is standing behind their dress code policy after one member claimed that she was told to put a shirt over her intimidatingly toned body.

As reported by KTVU Channel 2, Tiffany Austin was recovering from a car accident and getting back in shape with her first workout at the gym. However, her time exercising was cut short when a Planet Fitness employee stopped her. Austin explained, “She says, you know, ‘Excuse me, we've had some complaints. You're intimidating people with your toned body. So can you put on a shirt?’”

Ms. Austin was wearing a spaghetti strap tank top and capri pants with her midriff exposed, and she doesn’t think her attire was out of line. “I don’t feel like it’s anything crazy, but I mean you tell me if it’s burning your eyes,” Austin said with a laugh. Reportedly she was only told that the gym dress code prohibited wearing string tank tops. The Planet Fitness customer agreed to wear one of the shirts the gym provides patrons for free, but while she waited for the tee, another employee approached her with objections to her clothing. Feeling harassed and intimidated herself, Austin decided to get her money back and cancel her membership at the gym advertised as the “Judgement Free Zone” whose policy bans “gymtimidation.” McCall Gosselin, Planet Fitness spokesperson, said that criticizing Austin for being toned, “…is not in line with the Planet Fitness policy whatsoever.”

I guess I don’t know what ‘toned’ means. If it means have a soft tummy, then yeah - she’s toned.

This is just asking for a lawsuit and given that the target is a member of a protected class, they will be paying her to come back along with the EEOC and her attorneys if she wants to go that route.

I smell bs, lawsuit, and idiocy. If that is toned, then Obama is a Conservative. It is possible the manager was telling her to put on a shirt because she was not toned and offending others and tried to do it without telling her she was fugly.

I’m ok with this. I spend plenty of time at the gym and I don’t see anyone dressed like that. It’s also part of the gym policy as many people are paranoid about using a machine covered with sweat. You’re supposed to wipe everything when you’re done.

I think it’s stupid that she and the media are making a thing over it. Put on a friggin shirt, shut up and keep working out. No one is infringing on your right to exercise.

As common sense evaporates, lawsuits increase.

I’m wondering whether all this complaining was, as they carefully pretended, aesthetic or moral, or whether maybe it was racist.

Typically I don’t like these lawsuits, but it appears she should go right along and get as much money as possible from these idiots.

Planet Fatness is well-known for its idiotic policies.

Some of them have very little in the way of free weights. Good luck finding a squat rack & similar equipment. Others kick you out if you grunt too loud. Still others are fond of offering pizza & cookies at the front desk as a "reward".

Their appeal seems limited to the crowd that does not want to try too hard.

Their business model is that they’re not a place for muscleheads and gymbunnies. There are a lot of places for them and there’s a certain group of potential customers that don’t feel comfortable at those places. Those are the customers Planet Fitness is trying to get. It’s their “Unique Selling Point” as they say in marketing. They’re upfront about the fact and feature it in their advertising, so it’s not unexpected that they would actually, you know, deliver on what they’ve promised their customer.
