KIEV, Ukraine — In an effort to stabilize Ukraine and extend its authority, the interim government has set a deadline of Friday for turning in the illegal firearms that are now carried openly by so-called self-defense groups in Independence Square, the politically important plaza in the center of the capital.
The order was seconded on Thursday by the French ambassador to Ukraine, Alain Rémy, who said the disarmament of the militias that helped overthrow the former government is a central requirement for the European Union to begin disbursing financial aid, along with the government fighting corruption.
Prime Minister Arseniy P. Yatsenyuk, who was a staunch supporter of the protesters but never condoned violent tactics, set the deadline for Friday, the day Ukraine is scheduled to sign the political articles of an association agreement with the European Union.

I’m sure Tuvia was/is a nice fella. And his heart’s in the right place. But he could have done a better job finishing that thot: “ Without a rifle, shotgun, pistol, revolver and all the other weaponry you can get your hands on, and the willingness to use it in defense of yourself, family, property, neighborhood, you are a waste of space and-——the rest”
If the Ukes show some stiff spine Pootin will fold his tent and try something else later. With the absense of gun muzzles pointing at his “exercizers” he’ll think he has a free hand.

LOL ! They are doing this to take “we have to step in or these groups of armed fascists will start killing ethnic Russians” card out of Russian hand. Besides, the right to bear arms is largely American concept these days, which majority of other nations (including majority of allies, such as Israel) do not follow.

Go back and do some research on Charles Krauthammer's opinions on the subject. That guy doesn't have American values at all. He's a big-government globalist who is more interested in building an empire than promoting anything remotely resembling American values.
Hunting long firearms for anyone — that is what gun control looks like. Notice: no automatic anything, and no handguns.
There is a huge movement in RF to allow them handguns, because you cannot walk around with a shotgun to protect yourself.
At this point there is no going back for Ukraine, excepting possibly Crimea and South East. They are a proud nation that has been invaded. They will fight with sticks if they have to. They won’t be bought for anything. I think they made a decision about EU; they are not crazy about EU bureaucratic liberalism, but they’d rather have that than neo-sovietism of RF.
This sounds like something Obama would do.
It could be that the EU is going to give Ukraine to Russia anyway and that they didn’t like Maidan. Russia will then give gas at a lower rate to Europe (in exchange for bailing out Ukraine’s IMF loans, which was the original proposal accepted by Yakunivich). Win win for both sides. Russia gets Ukraine as a puppet state, Western Europe gets gas (and rid of an unreliable country which they don’t want to babysit anyway), and the Ukrainians, Poles, and Lat/lith/Estonians get the shaft.
Now, if the EU is going to cede Ukraine to Russia, they will not want Right Sector, Swoboda, and other groups causing trouble for the Russian occupiers and the new Puppet state.
In the end this will happen. Ukraine will not be free, and will end up in the clutches of Russia again. And it will be mostly because of the EU and IMF needing the money and energy.

Not to the point like it is in NYC. You won’t ever hear a story about someone getting jailed for years for a gun in your luggage there.
There are numerous loopholes in their legislation allowing you to carry a handgun openly. And in the south with their muslin problem KGB distributes military grade assault rifles to local populace who props border agents in fending off illegal aliens and deal with domestic mohamedans. Almost everyone has an AK there and police is overlooking it.
Penalties for gun-related violations are a joke in the rest of the country as well. Technically there is up to 8 years in prison for illegal arms trade (much less for possession) but you would have to trade a nuke or a dozen of tanks to get real term.
Do more research. The Ukraine, more than any other post Soviet satellite, ARE neo Communists and that is mainly why they are financially in the huge mess that they are in.
They never did shed most of those ways, like say, Russia did.

My comment was on what is the legislation, not what loopholes exist contrary to it.
You do research. Ukraine had an anti-communist revolution last February. Russia is suppressing it. That is the difference between these two countries.
Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.
Without that militia, that government would not be in power.
What a clear warning to the militias that they NEED to hang on to their guns.

I am sure there are plenty of KGB trained snipers from the Ukraine. Many combat veterans that learned the way of war in Afghanistan.
One bullet and all this goes away.
But I have not seen any fighting. No burning of Russian Flags. No stoning Russian Embassies. None of this in Ukraine or Europe or the USA. I am tired of going to other countries and protecting them when they themselves won’t.
Ah hell, who am I kidding. The europeons getting in a war with Russia over the Ukraine. NOT.
It’s very convenient for the Ukrainian government to help Putin like this.
