20,000 is a division-plus or a small corps. Not really enough to go deeply into the Ukraine even if we assume there won’t be a lot of opposition.

Like the US in Iraq, the Russians might be able to slice & dice in the opening phase, but once they ‘go static’ then the real problems begin.

They are just there for some R&R. No story here. Move along. What is Michele wearing today in China?

“Clashes between Russians and Ukrainian nationalists”... means provocations by Russian paid provocateurs, you mean. People I know there say that most natives and Russian transplants get along well, except for Putin’s agents.

“Crimea was so obvious, I think he wanted Eastern Ukraine all along.”

The Donetsk region is the real prize, as I said when all of this first started. Most of the industry, the pipeline hubs, and more importantly, the nickel mines.

“People I know there say that most natives and Russian transplants get along well, except for Putin’s agents.”

Is everyone that doesn’t agree with the Kiev coup a
Russian Agent”?

Everyone who agrees with Putin is a voluntary and ideological supporter of him. They’re the type of people targeted for espionage and treason.

Yeah...
That’s what I thought you would say.

What is it about Putin, if anything, that you do not agree with him on? Are you an American, by the way? Do you favor Soviet/Russian/Putinista hegemony in the world?

The morals are high,

I think you mean 'morale'. But hey, they could be quite moral...

Many traitors are ideological and don’t need money to join the enemy.

Everyone who agrees with Putin is a voluntary and ideological supporter of him.

So everyone who thought the Versailles Treaty was a terrible injustice to Germany is a Nazi?

No. They were the craven ones who he duped, like Keynes.

And they paved the way for Hitler with their focus on his grievances about the Versailles Treaty instead of his ongoing crimes against those who had nothing to do with the Versailles Treaty.

Ukrainian troops had time to prepare and reinforce the border. The morals are high, they are ready.

Let's hope so. Are they are real nation? I want to see a Ukrainian response. So far, it has been to roll over, and look to Obama and Merkel - a recipe for failure. Putin does not fear them. He DOES fear IED's, snipers killing his troops for decades, and having to occupy cities block-by-block in a long-expensive war. That may very well topple him from power. Putin has gambled there would be no response, and so far, he is correct.

Its a terrible proposition for the people there.

“What is it about Putin, if anything, that you do not agree with him on?”

See? You are at it again.
Anyone that doesn’t agree with the party line as determined by YOU is a “putinista”. I’ll bet you are really popular over at KOS, where Groupthink is the order of the day.

I don’t agree with Putin, but I do understand what is causing him to act. Is it to his advantage? Hell yes it is. Don’t think “rules for radicals”, think Machiavelli. “The Prince that is feared, is far more respected than the Prince that is loved.”

I’m on the other side of the world from this, with no personal stake in it, trying to observe the facts that are available to me, and interpret them as best I can.

You should try it sometime.

I'm not on the other side of the world.

I can name at least ten thing I don't approve of with Obama. Get outside your comfort zone. What do you not approve about Putin the Great?

I agree, but I don’t think pointing out when Putin actually has a case means we necessarily support him.

The fact is, with regards to Crimea, it doesn’t matter who the Russian leader is....there is no Russian leader who will allow an independent Ukraine with Crimea...they would be removed from power so fast, if they were to allow it.

Things I don’t approve of concerning Obama:
1. Obama Care.
2. Labeling all opposition against him as racist.
3. Supporting authoritarian governments hostile to the USA.
4. Not supporting Israel.
5. Harassment of Christians who oppose ObamaCare.
6. IRS harassment of political opposition.
7. Weakening US defense.
8. Over spending.
9. Over taxing Americans.
10. Demonizing opposition.

I see our friendly freeper is right on cue on this thread....wonder when reality will will wake them up?

Ukraine has it’s hands full just keeping the daily criminal element in line...not to mention their Government. Ukraine knows NAto will only send arms..nothing more...they will not go to war with Russia though maybe a few fire fights....

Brussels summit made pretty clear Eu not interested in going to war over Ukraine...and NAto membership for Ukraine off the table until a new government is seated AND functioning with the economic conditions there. They will not take on Ukraines debt, nor their instability any time soon and you’ll see them avoid and drag their feet on this issue...
