Cost of breakfast going up
Monterey Herald ^ | 03/21/2014 | STEVE ROTHWELL

NEW YORK — Breakfast is now being served with a side of sticker shock.

The price of bacon is surging and the cost of other morning staples, like coffee and orange juice, is set to rise because of global supply problems, from drought in Brazil to disease on U.S. pig farms.

And it's not just the first meal of the day that's being affected. The cost of meats, fish and eggs led the biggest increase in U.S. food prices in nearly 2 ½ years last month, according to government data. An index that tracks those foods rose 1.2 percent in February and has climbed 4 percent over the last 12 months.

While overall inflation remains low, the increases in food prices are forcing shoppers to search out deals and cut back.

Denise Gauthier, 54, a screenwriter in North Hollywood, calls the rising prices "shocking and outrageous." To cope, she has become more frugal, hunting for discounts and buying less food overall.

But I understand the world now has an oil glut.

Revelation 6:6

And I heard something like a voice in the center of the four living creatures saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not damage the oil and the wine.”

Used to be able to get a Jumbo Jack for a buck under Bush. Food is already up times four and they tell us there’s no inflation, or use cutesy poo phrases like “sticker shock.”

I’ve come around to a lot of the Morning Star fare for breakfast. Sausage patties, sausages, bacon. It’s all faked up but I got use to it pretty quick and came to like it.

Breakfast today is a Spicy Breakfast Sausage patty on an English muffin and a slice of cheese these days.

Same with their burgers. First one I ever tasted and I thought “huh?” Finished out the package and by the last one I was liking them. Different but okay. Now I have them several times a week and like them.

A denarius was roughly a days wages to buy less than a days wages worth of food. But there will be plenty of oil and wine.

The world is set up for a huge famine. Drought in the southwest, where a LOT of our vegetables and fruits are grown, coupled with late frost in the rest of the country. And it’s not just the US.

I’m not saying this is “it”. I’m just saying things are going to be worse than normal. How “worse” is yet to be seen. Meanwhile, we are looking at one of the biggest oil booms in history and it seems everyone is producing wine these days. Even here in KY it is catching on.

I used to eat those Morning Star burgers etc. but now I found that soy is GMO and no good for you so I buy the Hempler’s uncured bacon instead. I came to like the taste of Morning Star as well but...no soy, no GMOs in my house.

The world is set up for a huge famine. Drought in the southwest, where a LOT of our vegetables and fruits are grown, coupled with late frost in the rest of the country. And it’s not just the US.

The Third World has been drifting away from subsistence farming to working in factories. When the price of food exceeds what they're paid, famine ensues. You and I can just eat less steak and more chicken (probably be healthier for us too), but the people at the edge are looking at real hunger.

And you can put it all at the feet of the environmentalists, who are doing stuff like making us burn corn in our engines, and not giving California farmers irrigation water.

"How will this affect my Sausage and Egg McMuffin?"

Obama personally promises you that, if Congress passes the Affordable Breakfast Act, the cost of your Sausage and Egg McMuffin will go down 40%. Guaranteed. Call your Congresscritter today and tell him to get behind this important legislation that will make breakfast affordable to ALL Americans. And don't forget, if you make less than $96,000, you too will be eligible for the new Breakfast Subsidy.
