Skip to comments."The Conversation": Preparing for the great global Internet handover

Every suggestion I read about how to prepare for the great handover of Internet domain control to some vaporous global organism makes me more convinced this is a really bad idea. For example, the Heritage Foundation offers a brief, well-considered set of precautions, outlined by a group of four distinguished researchers and analysts, that makes my hackles go up, because I don't see what leverage we have to ensure any of their suggestions are implemented properly.

Bub-by FR, you were great while you lasted (you know this site will be one of the first to disappear).
“We are assured it won’t be some tumor growing out of the United Nations’ International Telecommunication Union, and it won’t be dominated by ugly dictatorships looking to censor their political adversaries. “
BELIEVE oh brothers and sisters... BELIEVE
would Revrant Obama Steer Us Wrong?
What does this mean for bloggers and individuals who have been posting on overseas accounts for freedom of speech purposes (to escape our jurisdiction)?
This reminds me of when Jimmy Carter relinquished our control of the Panama Canal for nothing. A company owned by the Chinese Military ended up running the canal.
The leader of any country on earth who actually wanted to protect the power of their own country would never give up control over the Internet. Never.
But that’s not what we have, do we Jimmy?—uh, I mean Barry?
and yet it’s treated like a forgone conclusion
Barry would give away anything he thought he could get away with it meant helping his pals in the MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD!
Imagine Iran as a key to the contolling body of the INTERNET!!
the All New SHARIANET awaits.
Basically, it means Humblegunner is going to get 'em!
“The Conversation” by Francis Ford Coppola was an excellent glimpse into the mindset now entertained by a big chunk of guv men, here and around the globe.
My sentiments exactly. One of the best shows ever, and so timely.
Rand Paul needs to be all over this issue like white on rice.
He could help save Internet freedom and pull Sili Valley techie money and votes from the Democrats in 2016
Handing it over as if it were theirs to give. :)
Look on the bright side: liberal politicians will finally be able to censor stuff they don’t like. :D
...I didn’t say it was a bright side for you. :P
Be prepared for all kinds of problems coming from this in luring hAcking malware etc
Why are we allowing Obama to do this? That is what I want to know.
Electing Obama means suicide.
Doing your banking on the internet are you? They are allowing criminals into the picture to purposley reek havoc thereby destroying free speech around the world
Not any more. Back to writing paper checks. Problem is the Feds have mandated elimination of most paper transactions over the next few years.
Good news folks! Outernet is coming so FR will have a safe place to go!
I swear it’s like I’m in some liberal fantasy. Why doesn’t someone in Congress just put a halt to this? Why?
I think it’s because Obama waited until conservatives got busy with their pre-pre-Presidential campaigns to spring this. That way he could actually take over the Internet all by himself and no one would speak up because they can’t interrupt their Iowa or SC trips for something as silly as our freedom.
What does this mean for bloggers and individuals who have been posting on overseas accounts for freedom of speech purposes (to escape our jurisdiction)?Won't mean or change a thing.
This reminds me of when Jimmy Carter relinquished our control of the Panama Canal for nothing. A company owned by the Chinese Military ended up running the canal.Huh? What do you mean? After the treaty with Carter in the late 70s, the Panama Canal was controlled by the Panama Canal Commission until 1999. That Commission was joint between the USA and Panama. After we left in 1999, the Panama Canal Authority took it over; it's a Panamanian government agency. What company are you talking about? I can't find any mention of such a company.
