Police Keep Quiet About Cell-Tracking Technology
Associated Press ^ | Saturday, March 22, 2014 | Jack Gillum

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Police across the country may be intercepting phone calls or text messages to find suspects using a technology tool known as Stingray. But they're refusing to turn over details about its use or heavily censoring files when they do.

Police say Stingray, a suitcase-size device that pretends it's a cell tower, is useful for catching criminals, but that's about all they'll say.

For example, they won't disclose details about contracts with the device's manufacturer, Harris Corp., insisting they are protecting both police tactics and commercial secrets. The secrecy - at times imposed by nondisclosure agreements signed by police - is pitting obligations under private contracts against government transparency laws.

Don’t say anything, don’t text anything and don’t take pictures of anything you want on the front page of a newspaper because that is how much privacy your smart phone and computer offer you.

Probably a hand off of gear from the NSA.

Many newspapers still publishing often have a listing of criminals being arrested each day or a weekly total.

It is amazing how many of the arrested criminals got stopped for a vehicle safety violation or a moving violation. After stopping the vehicle/driver, the police find a lot of illegal drugs in the vehicle or weapons.

When one thinks about all the vehicles on the road, one has to wonder how the cops did the needle in the haystack event to find a driver with a car loaded with illegal drugs and or weapons. No wonder, we seldom see any vehicle pulled over by the local LEO’s for excessive speed or reckless/endangering driving.

Anyone notice how many Sheriff’s departments have new buildings under construction that include some pretty heavy duty construction? Federal dollars paying for SCIFs?

Not owning, nor having a reason to use a cell phone, I find this article amusing.

If you do not want to be tracked and scanned and monitored, your cell phone’s best friend should be a mylar potato chips bag.

Local cops and sheriffs will be on the side of the feds. They will not be on the sides of the people who pay them. Why? Because we elect their bosses and believe that everything they do is wonderful because they’re only catching bad guys.

“everything they do is wonderful because they’re only catching bad guys”

I think that is no longer even a consideration for many cops. The Sheriff and large city police departments are hiring special operations guys like crazy, and to them it is all about getting to kick in doors like little soldiers. I live in a special ops area and have met all kinds that want to just get paid big bucks to kick in doors for a few years. They couldn’t care less about constitutional matters. That was removed from their heads in their military days. They enjoy being the prima donnas that get to be physical.
