Rhode Island House Speaker Gordon Fox is resigning from his leadership post and will not run for re-election, he said Saturday, a day after federal and state authorities raided his Statehouse office and home as part of a criminal investigation that they would not detail.

“Because of the respect I have for all members of the House of Representatives, I am resigning as Speaker,” Fox said in a written statement emailed to reporters. “The process of governing must continue and the transition of leadership must be conducted in an orderly manner.”

The 52-year-old Providence Democrat, who became the nation’s first openly gay House speaker in 2010, said he planned to serve out the remainder of his term through the end of the year, but that “my personal focus going forward will be on my family and dealing with the investigation.” It is unclear when Fox will officially resign, but the next scheduled meeting of the House is Tuesday. …

A corrupt Democrat? How unexpected...NOT. This is a resume enhancement. A felony conviction (or several) and prison time would be even better. Consider ex-mayor and convicted felon, Marion Barry who currently is on the Washington, DC City Council.

Thanks Olog-hai. Yesterday it was pointed out that (multiracial Democrat) Fox supported the 2nd Amendment and Voter ID. Today...

I think we might be missing something important here...

Speaker Fox is a Democrat and openly gay, and Eric Holder's office still signed off on the search warrants.

Either the "fix is in" and nothing will come of this, or else something was done that is so egregious that the Feds are afraid to be caught covering it up.

These days, it isn’t pessimistic to presume the worst.

Hey Erika Niedowski and Michelle R. Smith of Associated Press... If this man had been a Republican you would have put that "R" information in the first paragraph.

Please be consistent... what you've done makes the AP look like a bunch of biased hacks. You can do better...

Headline would read “REPUBLICAN Rhode Island speaker to step down after FBI Raids (Did we mention that he is a REPUBLICAN?)”

This doesn’t sound like a Democrat. They tend not to step down when caught.

Didn’t someone post that this guy is fairly conservative?

Hard to say what “fairly conservative” means in RI.

LOL - in the first paragraph we’d find: ‘unconfirmed rumors connect him to the Tea Party’...
