You mean the kind of faces that Eddy Von Helen and other guitar hero virtuosos make when hitting high notes?
There are certain guitarists and singers who should turn away from the audience when they step into that Old Black Water of intensity . Some bizarre expressions or embarrassing body contortions, are better suited for ‘Behind Closed Doors’, as Charlie Rich used to sing.
But they are part of the show. I mean, have you ever seen Yo Yo Ma making faces or contorting his body? I’ve just watched Brenda Lee’s video made when she was perhaps 50, contorting like a disco queen, and that while singing a ballad. On the other hand, watch the lead singer of a group called Future Islands on a recent Letterman appearance. Him vs his two mates, frozen bodies, bored faces.
Brenda Lee as a Disco Queen? Well now. I may have to look that up online just for a chuckle, or could be she made it work. I recall in the late 70’s, in what was perhaps her last recording , Ethel Merman sang Disco. It may have been her 4/4 version of Copacabana. There were so many versions, or ‘covers’ for that song. To me, Ethel sounded desperate, loud, of course, but still desperate to be seen as a star.
No, I misspoke, Brenda Lee contorted like a disco queen for lack of a better comparison, but she sang an old ballad, and the same ballad sung when she was 15 was done in a dignified way.
The Great Dane Selfie will live IN INFAMY! One can almost see the steam coming out of Michelle’s ears. Wonder is she still has that Tiffany/ Crystal Floor Lamp by her bedside, or was it ‘damaged’ during their Kenyan visit.
