Media wrongly attack Drudge after he admits paying Obamacare penalty
The Washington Times ^ | Saturday, March 22, 2014 | Kelang Howell

Posted on 03/23/2014 4:21:25 AM PDT by Star Traveler

Left leaning media outlets criticized Internet news mogul Matt Drudge’s tweets on Friday, but the backlash stemmed from a misunderstanding of how Obamacare will affect small businesses.

On Friday, Matt Drudge tweeted, “Just paid the Obamacare penalty for not ‘getting covered’… I’M CALLING IT A LIBERTY TAX!”

A few minutes later, Jason Lee, the Director of Progressive Media at the White House, tweeted a response, saying Mr. Drudge’s tweet was a, “flat lie, no fee for previous year. Scary how much influence he once had.”

From there, the tweets came rolling in, attacking Mr. Drudge via social media and liberal news outlets, Breitbart reported.

“Dude, there’s no penalty until next yr,” Sahil Kapur of Talking Points Memo tweeted, followed with a full story in the news outlet with a headline saying Mr. Drudge was “probably lying.”

“Americans don’t pay a penalty for not having health insurance until they file their 2014 taxes—in 2014,” Dylan Scott wrote in the story. “So either Drudge is lying or he paid a huge penalty a year earlier than he needed to.”

A similar story appeared in Huffington post, in which the author, Jeffrey Young, wrote Mr. Drudge’s tweet was “weird” and a “little head-scratching.”

Obviously, Drudge STILL has lots of influence, otherwise all these leftist idiots wouldn't be responding "within minutes".

The reality is that investigative journalism has dissolved, and people who pretend to be reporters....simply read cue cards and write 149-character supportive responses.

We could draft up five hundred kids from high schools across the nation to take over CNN, the New York Times, and Washington Post....and they’d do as good or better jobs as the characters who pretend to work today.

Sad to see how far the line of journalism has fallen.

You are far too kind.

Drudge says: I just paid a tax.
Libs say: Oh no, you didn't!

It's exactly like Obama's "You didn't build that!" The Liberals won't give us credit for anything. They think we are frauds, liars, and phonies. And when the Libs say something which is egregiously ignorant, we turn around and say, "I'm going to cut them some slack ..."

It's why we lose.

As PT Barnum allegedly said: "There is no such thing as Bad Publicity" and Matt Drudge knows this well, and has certainly used this to his advantage. He could never purchase this kind of PR for the paltry "Liberty Tax" (relative to his income) which reputedly is somewhere between $10-20 million per year. The Obamacare tax (or penalty)cannot exceed the national average yearly premium for a bronze plan. So let's say the average premium is $400 per month ($4800 per year) and he has to pay 1/4 of that amount this quarter, we're talking $1200 bucks, which isn't going to put a big dent in his wallet, but has gotten his name all over the news for at least this weekend, if not longer. What a Deal!

I know he was pointing out the principle of the whole thing, and I applaud him for doing it, but have to think there was also an ulterior motive.

Journalists are turning into 3rd rate bloggers. Real journalism is all but dead.

Why spend hundreds of thousands for special investigative reporting when you can just make something up.

It’s true, but even some of the good blogs fail every so often, some of the good ones people post excerpts here fall into similar traps of presenting opinion as fact.

But if you think about the term Journalist. Somebody who keeps a journal, well a blog is a journal so Blogger == Journalist.

New Words:

Journalticion == Hybrid between a mediocre journalist + mediocre politician currently posing as a journalist.

Politist == Hybrid between a mediocre politician + mediocre journalist currently posing as a politician.

The Washington Times needs to do a better job than this. There are a couple of errors in the piece that don’t help the case. Jesse Lee, not Jason Lee, for instance.

Apart from trial lawyers and hairdressers, who on the Left would have any clue about quarterly filing? What a wonderful example of their ignorance.

Let's check the actual IRS forms. From 2014 form 1040-ES page 2:

Health care coverage.

When you file your 2014 tax return in 2015, you will need to either (1) indicate on your return that you and your family had health care coverage throughout 2014, (2) claim an exemption from the health care coverage requirement for some or all of 2014, or (3) make a payment if you do not have coverage or an exemption(s) for all 12 months of 2014. For examples on how this payment works, go to www.IRS.gov/aca and click under the “Individuals & Families” section. You may want to consider this when figuring your “Other taxes” on Line 12 of the 2014 Estimated Tax Worksheet. For general information on these requirements, go to www.IRS.gov/aca .

Advance payments of the Premium Tax Credit.

If you buy health care insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace, you may be eligible for advance payments of the Premium Tax Credit to help pay for your insurance coverage. Receiving too little or too much in advance will affect your refund or balance due. Promptly report changes in your income or family size to your Marketplace. You may want to consider this when figuring your estimated taxes for 2014. For more information, go to www.IRS.gov/aca and see Publication 5120 and Publication 5121 .

So the IRS is even telling you that you have to include your Obamacare tax/penalty/fee/fine/tax in your estimated tax starting on April 15.

So, if H&R Block is right, Drudge’s literal claim is probably not exactly true, either.
...
That depends on how much money he plans to make this year.

This comes from the Yahoo "The Sideshow" Columnist Eric Pfeiffer in his commentary. First I love that first 'tortured English' line of "probably not exactly true" ?!?

As for the second line, how many people do we know that can say how much they are going to make in the next year? If you are salaried you can estimate but if you add together all of the other income items and adjustments even that is an estimate and if you are exclusively self-employed it then turns on how consistent your income and expense stream is as well. To make this statement, Mr Pfeiffer shows his own ignorance.

Next as an 'Enrolled Agent', professional tax preparer, I'll address the actual issue. Let us start at the begging of a tax year preparation. For those people who do not have tax withholding on their income, they are REQUIRED to pay quarterly estimated tax payments through the body of the year in question or face a possibility of a fine for lack of this payment. In the most basic computation to create the amount of this first 2014 quarterly payment (April 15th due date), you take the (2013) prior year tax liability, divide it into quarters and pay that amount. This is called the 'safe harbor' method and eliminates the possibility of a subsequent 2014 fine.

The rub, and it takes the dedicated liberal mind to find fault here, suppose the taxpayer (Mr Drudge) wishes to avoid large 2014 balance due and perhaps unfriendly discussions of low payments and such from IRS records illegally disclosed or politically motivated speeches by Harry Reid. In this case you add in the pro-rated penalty of 1% of 2013 AGI into the quarterly tax payment. Thus you are pre-paying a known potential tax, something the usual liberal can't is quite predisposed to favor, EXCEPT when it highlights a storm that they would like to avoid until after the current election!

The joke around my tax office is whether we will need to be wearing flack jackets for next year's tax season. No matter how well we warn or how clear we make the danger known, it is not going to be pretty when that bite hits someone who cannot afford it!

Yahoo probably has the worst story on it yet.

Not only do they wrongly present it as if there’s not an IRS entry line for Drudge to add onto his estimated quarterlies other estimated taxes, such as this one, but they claim that someone earning a million would owe $10K—when the cap on what’s owed is the average national cost of a bronze plan on the exchanges.

"Conservatives believe that liberals are good people with bad ideas."

The perfect summation of the naivity of the sheeple concerning the ideology of Obama-enabler, phoney-"fairness"-promoter, Bill O'Reilly, who believes and continues to iterate that the Liar-in-Chief is really a good, patriotic American at heart...a president who is always trying to do the right thing for our country....and who is basically a good and honest man....just a little mixed up sometimes.
