NATO's top military commander said on Sunday that Russia had a large force on Ukraine's eastern border and he was worried it could pose a threat to Moldova's separatist Transdniestria region.
The warning comes a day after Russian troops, using armored vehicles, automatic weapons and stun grenades, seized the last military facilities under Ukrainian control in Crimea, the Black Sea peninsular that Russian President Vladimir Putin formally annexed on Friday.
"The (Russian) force that is at the Ukrainian border now to the east is very, very sizeable and very, very ready," NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe, U.S. Air Force General Philip Breedlove, told an event held by the German Marshall Fund think-tank.

Let me see here. What was our defense plan for an all out soviet invation out of the east? Humm, I believe it consisted of fall back positions while our armored force could be mobilized. OK, what armored force we talking about now. Err, well, not so much since it has been hollowed out since the “end” of the USSR. What was the second idea, oh yes, tactical nukes. I just bet the Germans et al are just waiting for the go order there.
When I heard we dispatched a few fighters to poland in a show of strength, I was thinking back to a D Day movie when the Nazi’s mobilized their air defenses in the south of france and managed to get two ME 109s up over the beach head. In actuality, we had 20 to 40 to one advantage. Nonetheless, I would bet anyone with a brain would laugh at this as a show of strength or committment.
Transdniestria has been independent since the USSR broke up. They’ve always been closer to Russia anyway.
How can a Russian military buildup on Ukraine’s eastern border be a threat to Moldova, when Moldova is on the opposite side of Ukraine? Is there a buildup in Romania, too?
There are Russian troops stationed in the Transdniestria Region; it seems likely that it would be a similar operation to the one Putin conducted against the Crimea. Those troops and the Russian living in that area are the camel’s nose under the tent. They could create conditions where they call for help, too, from their homeland. Then, Putin, perforce don’t you see, comes to the rescue, possibly with his shirt off to show off his man boobs.
Because they’re mobile, and *even in western Asia* these are modern times.
