Is Obama Planning to Ditch His Blackberry?
ABC News ^ | March 21, 2014 | By Jeff Zeleny

It was only five years ago when Barack Obama fought mightily to keep his BlackBerry — becoming the first president to be connected by email.

Now, he may be looking for an upgrade.

The White House is in the early stages of testing smartphones, the Wall Street Journal reported on yesterday, with devices from Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics being examined by the White House Communications Agency.

If the president leaves his BlackBerry behind for a new smartphone, it’s another sign of the times from when George W. Bush famously sent a farewell message from his AOL address when he took office — saying he would no longer be reachable by email.

“Since I do not want my private conversations looked at by those out to embarrass, the only course of action is not to correspond in cyberspace,” Bush wrote. “This saddens me. I have enjoyed conversing with each of you.”

Obama has kept that conversation going, communicating with friends in crisp messages. People who receive them say they are usually short and sweet and always free of emoticons. Soon, he could have many more options at his fingertips.

I’m guessing the NSA is going to provide him a “special” one.

They would say he's being ironic.

What’s a Blackberry?

Seriously, I had one about 4 years ago. I don’t know why in God’s name anyone would still use one, aside from the BB Messenger. The secure/encrypted Messenger and email capability are about the only things one would be useful for, aside from phone calls of course. They’re just barely above the old flip phones with regard to functionality.

It’s ironic how most ‘low information’ people tend to view 0bama as being all hip, intelligent, and cutting edge with his use of technology and hanging out with *uckerberg, using Twitter, ect. While the actual truth is 0bama is a Luddite compared to Rush Limbaugh, who is light years ahead of 0bama with regard his use of technology and knowledge of it.

I can guarantee you that they’ve done their best to not let them know.

They have an image of how he’s techno-savvy. Truth is the guy barely knows anything about the internet but he hires people to guide him.

I would be shocked if someone, somewhere within our government doesn’t produce a proprietary, albeit secure, RTOS...I guess that would require a ‘special’ phone indeed.

What alternative has a real tactile keyboard for more accurate typing?

Yeah, the keyboards on the Blackberry WERE nice. That was the only thing about them I missed. I totally hated the on screen graphical ‘keyboards’ at first, but got used to them. I don’t see how someone that has big fingers could use one very well.

Yes, I imagine he still finds those quite useful.

All that time "playing golf"?

What do you think he is really doing?

He should be able to afford an upgrade. At 400k per year x 5 years = $2mil plus free room and board plus transportation, security, and health care.

Here’s an odd little factoid: the Hawaiian word for blackberry, “popolo” is also slang for a black person, sometimes derogatory, particularly used in combination with “lolo,” which basically means crazy. Which, by the way, was the name of Obama’s adoptive father. Lolo.
