Ebola epidemic reaches Guinea capital, UNICEF says

An epidemic of the deadly Ebola virus in Guinea has now reached the country’s capital of Conakry, the United Nations children's agency said on Sunday.

"At least 59 out of 80 who contracted Ebola across the West African country have died so far. Over the past few days, the deadly haemorrhagic fever has quickly spread from the communities of Macenta, Gueckedou, and Kissidougou to the capital, Conakry," UNICEF said.

Conakry, a vast, sprawling port city on Guinea's Atlantic coast, is estimated to have a population of between 1.5 and two million.

To date, no treatment or vaccine is available for Ebola, which kills between 25 and 90 percent of those who fall sick, depending on the strain of the virus, according to the World Health Organisation.

I read that several years ago Iran sent people to obtain Ebola samples during an outbreak. The fear was that they were trying to weaponize it. The thing that has saved the west from a serious outbreak is that the people who get it die too quickly to get to someplace with rapid transport. But eventually somebody will get on board a 747 and infect everybody on board. They’ll get off in Hamburg or Moscow and catch new flights to all points on Earth. Within hours the disease could spread across the entire world.

It seems impossible because it has been generations since the last pandemic. But “Spanish” flu killed twenty million in the first four months. It took world war one four years to kill that many.

It’s really hard to get all concerned and sentimental over a continent that is synonymous with internicine warfare, slavery, child abuse, and crime.

“That scenario sounds like one of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse.”

The Four Horseman of the Apocalypse broke up a few years back. Petulance was so broken up over the introduction of antibiotics he retired and now runs a brothel in Haiti. The remaining three held auditions. Now the Four Horseman are War, Famine, Death and Bob.

The group hasn’t done anything of note since. Mostly they do lounge acts in Vegas.

“Petulance” Pestilence...excuse me. I didn’t mean to imply one of the Four Horseman was a teenager.

We could do without pictures of a man who murdered his wife and strangled his seven year old son. (Chris Benoit, lower right).

Or any one of a few Clancy novels (Rainbow Six comes to mind since I recently re-read that).

Well Ebola is not the easiest disease to catch, so as long as you keep to yourself and practice strict blood borne pathogens and OPIM protocols, you should be relatively safe. However, unprotected sex and a cesspit like NY, now that’s a scary prospect!

From the link - nomad - this stuff’s highly contagious...

Because Ebola is extremely contagious and can be passed by even an innocuous transmission of body fluids such as a sneeze, or even just touching an infected person, the best medical workers can do is isolate Ebola patients and treat them while themselves covered head-to-toe in protective biohazard suits.

Even people who have taken such precautions must disinfect themselves after coming in contact with an Ebola patient, and deceased victims must be buried immediately.

We need to stop all flights in and out of this area until they’ve got this under control.

With well under 100 infections the transmissibility and morbidity of this strain is obviously not that great, contrary to popular opinion. But not something you want to take any risk of catching whatsoever.

Hypothetical question: What would happen if a crowded plane was in the air, and it became known that everyone on that plane had been exposed to the most deadly strain of Ebola? There must be a plan.

“Hypothetical question: What would happen if a crowded plane was in the air, and it became known that everyone on that plane had been exposed to the most deadly strain of Ebola? There must be a plan.”

I suspect they’d land at a military base and the passengers would be met with men in biohazard 5 containment suits. I can’t see any elected politicians in the western world shooting down an airliner. Also, shooting it down may cause uncontrolled spreading if it manages not to catch fire.

I’m willing to bet there isn’t any plan anymore than there was a plan to deal with a 9/11. Governments had known of Islamic plans to use an airliner since it was tried a decade prior to 9/11 in a failed attempt to destroy the Eiffel Tower. A passenger overheard the plan in Arabic and told the stewardess. The stew told the pilot and he faked a low fuel condition and landed in Italy where the plane was surrounded and rushed by police. But even knowing nobody developed a plan to deal with that scenario.

Then it is airborne. That category is the highest class, influenza being an example. I heard Ebola Reston was airborne but never Ebola Zaire. Contact barrier protection was all I`ve ever heard was absolutely necessary, although any such deadly disease always gets the "full monty" of PPE.

A person can get on a plane - infect a few hundred before landing in New York - and 5 weeks later it’s in your city.
