French far-right triumphs in local polls that hammer ruling Socialists

Paris (AFP) - France's far-right National Front party dealt a major blow to the ruling Socialists Sunday after several of its candidates took prime position in the first round of local elections.

The main centre-right opposition UMP party also hailed a "big victory" as initial estimates showed it came out trumps in the elections, as President Francois Hollande suffers record unpopularity against a backdrop of near-zero growth and high unemployment.

According to preliminary results from the interior ministry, the UMP and allies took 47 percent of the vote nationwide while the Socialist party and allies took 38 percent, and the FN five percent -- far higher than its 0.9 percent result in the first round of 2008 municipal polls.

Applauding what she said was "an exceptional vintage for the FN", Marine Le Pen -- head of the anti-immigration, anti-EU party -- said the polls marked the "end of the bipolarisation of the political scene".

Although the FN had been expected to do well, the first round results were far better than expected.

“Far Right” would mean that they ARE socialists.

A nationalist socialist is still a socialist. They just don’t want to enslave themselves to foreigners.

I go to France a lot for biz.

Not surprised at all.

The real French have had it with the Arabs and Africans.

Now they don’t care what names they’re called, they want their nice, happy, soft little country back and the thugs thrown out.

But it may be too late.

Not always but often the term far Right is just a pejorative used against conservatives or traditionalist.

“Far Right” implies “racist.”

So the MSM (at least the French branch of it) calls the opposition “far right.” In my book, it means nothing

Who knows what they really stand for?

In Europe, “far right” means centrist or slightly left of center here. But the right also has some anti-semitism that is not in the right here.

A nationalist socialist is still a socialist.

A nationalist socialist is a Nazi.

>> “Far Right” would mean that they ARE socialists. <<

Yep. What the media claims is "Far Right" in France are actually national socialist neo-NAZIs (redundant I know) whose economic policies are about as left-wing as it gets. It's true they vehemently oppose Muslim immigration, but they vehemently oppose anyone in France who's not a fascist neo-NAZI frenchman like themselves, and are just as anti-Jew as they are anti-Muslim.

Of course, what the media claims are "mainstream" right-wing French parties aren't any better either. Their "conservatives" like Sarkozy are to the left of our Democrats (yes, despite a bunch of freepers gushing over Sarkozy and claiming otherwise, Sarko was criticizing Obama from the LEFT and complaining he wasn't taking "serious enough" steps to combat global warming)

The media wants votes to associate "right wing = racist" in their minds, so any racist group will be labeled "right-wing" no matter how leftist their policies are.

Sadly, some conservatives in the United States actually believe the BS about National Front being "far-right conservatives". Probably the same types who embrace the media labeling us "red" and believe all the new deal Democrats who fought desegregation were the "true conservatives back then before the two parties switched sides"

I'm really sick of useful idiots on our side spreading the media's propaganda for them.

I also heard Le Pen thinks Iran is a potential ally.

I love how France and Europe in general ricochets between borderline Marxist socialism and borderline fascist authoritarianism, without freedom in between. Only thing people in Europe can agree on is their hatred of Jews.

excellent summation. Those people may serve some purpose to us as to the conversation (me at my most cynical) but they are not our allies.

What everyone needs to realize is that the Left/Right axes in the US and Europe aren’t the same. In Europe, statism is a given—”Left” means international socialism/statism, while “Right” means national socialism/statism. According to the US axis, all of European politics is on the “Left.” Here, the axis is determined by the acceptance of an overweening government—”Left” means the supremacy of the state over the individual, while “Right” means the supremacy of the individual over the state. By our standards, “Far Right” would probably mean anarchist, but certainly not national socialist. That’s just another form of leftism.

Only five percent!

Any aspect of socialist ideology belongs on the left side of the political spectrum right along with any other tyrannical totalitarian philosophy.

So it starts-—the train heading over the long un-used Nazi tracks. This will not bode well for Muslims! Liberals! and Muli-Nationals. This time Jews will get a pass.
