It’s OK to make speculations like that in private but not on the air where your reputation and credibility is on the line. Maybe the good general wanted out of his FOX gig but now everyone will think he’s a crackpot.

One thing doesn’t make sense to me. Why didn’t they wait for this presser until they had confirmation that actual debris was found that was the wreckage of the plane? Why go out there and make an announcement with no real proof.

There has been talk the last few days that some wanted to end the search for this thing. Is this how they are going to do it?

Why should anyone comment without real evidence? After all, we have already waited for a couple weeks, why not wait a few days more?

Yet no one seems to be able to explain this plane just magically vanished off radar systems travelling to Beijing, transponders seeming turned off and yet was still able to fly for many hours until it crashed in the south indian ocean in the opposite direction without anyone picking it up. Good luck explaining that.

Have not retrieved, but have spotted and marked with a smoke flare.

Since it is now night in the area, they will regroup in the morning.

How long will that smoke flare burn?

It was a mind-numbingly stupid thing for him to do in the first place. Very low probability and zero evidence to back it up.

There always was speculation that the plane, if in Pakistan, was destroyed, evidence would be positioned in the ocean to keep the hijacking from being known

I wholeheartedly agree -- there's nothing new, the "evidence" isn't evidence at all (since there's nothing to link it with the plane, and no one intends to go fish it out of the water to check), and it has been, what, over two weeks? Three? Since the flight started, it's time to put this to bed.
PM NAJIB RAZAK’S PRESS STATEMENT ON MH370 -- This evening I was briefed by representatives from the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB). They informed me that Inmarsat, the UK company that provided the satellite data which indicated the northern and southern corridors, has been performing further calculations on the data. Using a type of analysis never before used in an investigation of this sort, they have been able to shed more light on MH370’s flight path.

I'm very sorry for your loss.

In the case of MH370, more than two weeks of misinformation, conflicting reports, rumors and speculation have tortured the families of MH370. They didn't know whether their loved ones had perished, or were being held hostage in a remote location. At least they are closer to knowing the fate of the souls onboard the aircraft.

Not too many radar sets in the Indian Ocean. It’s just about the perfect place to lose yourself if you had to pick one. As another poster mentioned, satellites had to be repositioned to conduct this search as this is not regular territory for them to be paying too much attention to.

If the plane is in the water SW of Perth, then it must have flown on autopilot, with both pilots dead or disabled and the cockpit locked, until it ran out of fuel.

How they got dead without the aircraft being destroyed is difficult to imagine, but an electrical fire that disabled ACARS and the transponder, and generated CO or some other toxic substance before burning out could do it.

Notice I did say, “IF the plane is in the water”. We should know that soon.

The odds of finding any debris in the ocean down there is slim to none and the families and airlines and insurance companies all need to move on.

Debris from this wreckage will probably wash up thousands of miles away from there several years from now.

I was thinking about that...I am no conspiracy theorist, but I do really want to see how much aircraft debris they do pick up in the Indian Ocean. Also, will they locate the black box? If they end the investigation based on satellite data and never find any other evidence...call me suspicious.

I don’t know about that. It has been said that with the changes in altitude (noted before in the news), there had to be some manual control for some part of the flight. To get that far out, they had to get back to cruising altitude for the most efficient flight (to fuel) before possibly running out of fuel (or some purposeful “ditching”).

The BBC’s Richard Westcott has spoken to British satellite company Inmarsat, which said the data was given to the Air Accident Investigation Branch on Sunday, and that the calculations were based on an entirely new way of modelling the movement of aircraft.

You’re ignoring the fact that there is new data.

It's new to the Malaysian PM -- but not everyone else. It's not new to the 14 nations that have been searching the area where he now says the plane went down.

What you are ignoring is that until today the Malaysians have bees searching the waters way up in the Andamans while everyone else has been looking thousands of miles south off Australia.

The Malaysian PM just woke up to the data that everyone has known for 10 days.

It went south??? Well Duhhhh!

Inmarsat said the new calculation basically involved crunching far more data - things like what other aircraft were doing at the time - and it needed to be checked before it went public.

I want to hear from the General too.

After following this daily, the lack of verifiable evidence put forth by the “officials” is underwhelming. I have been lied to so often by our .gov, and all the media “exspurts”, that I no longer accept what I am told to believe.

We probably will never know what happened, and conspiracy theories will explode all over the ‘net.

So, I hope the General will clarify, for he is the most trustworthy of the whole lot, so far.

“So, I hope the General will clarify, for he is the most trustworthy of the whole lot, so far...”

By his words he had demonstrated that he is not the most trustworthy, clearly. He was led astray by wild speculation, guesses, and, unsubstantiated claims. Then, he lacked the good judgment needed in something like this and went public with it.

Actually, I don’t think we will know soon. If your theory is correct (and I think its the most likely), then the plane flew at 40,000 feet until it ran out of fuel, and dropped nose first into the ocean. In that scenario, there’s not going to be any debris to find. Certainly nothing big enough to find in the southern Indian Ocean.
