~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado

Peterson Air Force Base is a base of the United States Air Force located at Colorado Springs in El Paso County, Colorado, United States and it provides runways for the adjacent City of Colorado Springs Municipal Airport under a shared joint civil-military airport arrangement. It was named in honor of 1st Lt Edward Joseph Peterson who was killed in a crash at the base.

Peterson AFB is home to the United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM), North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), Air Force Space Command (AFSPC), AFSPC's 21st Space Wing (21 SW), Army Space Command, and the Air Force Reserve Command's 302d Airlift Wing (302 AW). The 21 SW serves as host unit for Peterson AFB.

The 21st Space Wing, headquartered at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo., is the Air Force's only organization providing missile warning and space control to unified commanders and combat forces worldwide. They are located in five countries, crossing 13 time zones, consisting of five groups, a director of staff, 39 units at 27 locations. They literally cover the world with their operations.

The 21st SW provides missile warning and space control to North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Strategic Command through a network of command and control units and ground based sensors operated by geographically separated units around the world.

Principal military flight operations at Peterson AFB are currently conducted by the 302d Airlift Wing (302 AW), an Air Mobility Command (AMC)-gained unit of the Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC). Previously stationed at the former Rickenbacker AFB, Ohio, the 302 AW relocated to Peterson in 1985 when Rickenbacker converted to an Air National Guard installation.

The 302 AW consists of over 1,200 traditional part-time Air Force Reservists and over 200 full-time Air Reserve Technician (ART), Active Guard and Reserve (AGR) and USAF civil service personnel operating and maintaining 13 C-130H Hercules aircraft.

On 28 July 2006, operations formerly conducted in Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) were relocated to Peterson Air Force Base for purposes of efficiency. The Cheyenne Mountain Complex will be left on warm standby until such time the protection of the mountain is again required. NORAD officials no longer feel there is a threat of an intercontinental nuclear attack which could disrupt NORAD's operations.

The Peterson Air And Space Museum's mission is to preserve and portray the rich aviation and space history of Colorado Springs and Peterson Air Force Base. It is located within an 8.3 acre Colorado State Historic District. Exhibits feature the WW II Peterson Army Air Base, the Binational (United States and Canadian) North American Aerospace Defense Command, US Air Force and Army Air Defense Commands, and the US Air Force Space Command. I grew up near the edge of the Eglin AFB reservation. There was a bombing range almost within sight. I could go up to the highest spot in our pasture and watch the Phantoms, F-100s, F-104s, F-105s, A-10s, diving, strafing, bombing etc.

They would disappear from sight around 2/3rds down their dive then would pull up again and I would hear the results and sometimes actually feel the bombs.

I had an early Nikon 7X35mm binocular. It was made in Occupied Japan and had of all things slightly soft coated lenses. I had to be careful cleaning them but boy they were good, sharp binos.

They had another type test which I never understood but they did it for years. They would have an F-104 Fly right by our house which was way in the country, and there would always be an F-100 just behind it both really low, maybe 200 feet. They would basically make a long circle and come by again. Repeat this several times then do it again the next day.

This kept up for several years and like I said, I had no idea what they were doing. Anyway Eglin was a fun place to be around.

I know Eglin well. Spent time there as a Ranger student and later as an instructor training students. We used to traverse some of those ranges going in and out of the swamps along the Yellow River. Bomb casings everywhere sticking out of the sand. Loved watching the AC-130s out of Hurlburt doing their thing on the ranges at night.

My Sister worked at Hurlburt during Summers when she was in college. This was back in the early 60s and it was called Field 9 back then. While she worked there the Cubans were training for the “Bay of Pigs” invasion. They were using B-26 attack bombers. Each had 8, .50 caliber machine guns in their noses.

There were Cubans all over the place. My Sister was brought home after work by one who looked just like Desi Arnaz, I mean he could have been his twin. They were going on a date but my Mother put her foot down. “You are not going out with a Cuban, Period!” Evelyn complained and said every girl on base wanted to date him but Mother was firm.

LOL. Could have been Desi! I served with a Cuban Major in the early 80s who was in the Bay of Pigs invasion and captured by Castros forces. Released with his fellow POWs in ‘62 in exchange for materiel from the US.

Home safe and sound...thanks. Scared myself hitting one really slick spot coming home.

My computer guy was here...looks like my Mom’s hard drive is on its last leg....won’t let him back up either. So my sister and I are gently pitching moving her office upstairs with the living room, kitchen, and bedrooms...and my Dad’s office which already has a PC in it. She has always said no, but is wavering. So we’ve had our first lesson in Outlook Express (I think). She has a Mac.

I just have to figure out how to make her comfortable with whatever keeps her happy, but more safe.

From ConorMacNessa...

A rough evening - Mrs. MacNessa had a fall on her way out the front door this afternoon - fractured tibia and fibula. We were at the ER until well after 9:00. She’s splinted - we need to see the orthopod tomorrow. She is in substantial pain. Unless they can reduce both fractures by manipulation, she will need surgery.

She was insisting on going to work tomorrow - God Bless her for her moxie! It’s not going to happen, and it’s gradually sinking in.

Prayers requested.
