A man returning to Canada from Liberia is seriously ill in hospital after experiencing symptoms consistent with the Ebola virus that has killed dozens in Guinea, health officials have said.

The man has been placed in solitary confinement pending the expected results on Tuesday of tests on his condition. His family are in quarantine in Saskatchewan province, the local health ministry said in a statement.

"A diagnosis has not yet been confirmed. Measures have been taken to isolate the patient to ensure the illness is not transmitted," the ministry said.

Public health officials earlier sought to contain people's concerns, saying the risk to the public was low and noting that an investigation into the case's circumstances was under way.

In two to twenty one days we’ll know if anyone came into contact with his body fluids. Ebola is a pretty wretched disease. If I were a cautious and diligent public health person, I’d begin isolation of those that flew with him from Africa.

I pity the person who sat next to this man on the airplane. Or, the stewardess who touched his hand while serving a drink. Or, the person checking the man’s passport. Or, the people handling the luggage. Or, the person that was standing too close when the man coughed. Or, the individual who sat on the toilet right after this person. Or, the relative and/or friend who gave the man a hug as a greeting. Or, the person who cleaned the man’s plate at a restaurant. You get the point.... This can be dangerous, very, very dangerous

OR ANY OF THE PEOPLE THOSE PEOPLE KNOW...

“I doubt he has ebola unless he was up in “that” region. If he was in Monrovia, and has been for the last 10 days, then most of Monrovia would be dead.

CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) — An outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus is believed to have killed at least 59 people in Guinea and may already have spread to neighboring Liberia, health officials said Monday.

Health workers in Guinea are trying to contain the spread of the disease which causes severe internal bleeding. In neighboring Liberia, health officials said they are investigating five deaths after a group of people crossed the border from Guinea in search of medical treatment.

I don’t expect Ebola to get much traction in a civilized country.

“How many people were on the plane with him... any idea?”

Canada doesn’t seem to be releasing that info. Probably don’t want to create a world-wide panic.

“We need to stop the flights while we still can...”

You would think so, but this isn’t the movies.

Real life economic and political consequences from doing that, that NO politician wants to be responsible for.

Tom Clancy wrote about this in a couple of novels. Executive Orders and Rainbow six.

According to the article, this person was not ill when he travelled," Werker added. "People are not very contagious in the incubation period. There is also a possibility this person has another disease."

Hopefullly that's the case.

There is a higher probability that a “friend” gave him some gator bile right there in Monrovia.

Quick identification and quarantine.

Instead of sweating it out in shack along an open sewer where kids play...the infected will be in hospital.

That's the difference.

Yeah, those unfortunate enough to get it will likely die a horrible death, but it's not AS likely to spread in a civilized country.

Relax. The nice thing about Ebola is that it kills nearly everyone that gets it, and there’s a very short gestation period, right?

If it did escape where it’s at, a week of lockdown and it’s gone.

A simple strain of flu is much more dangerous.

Super simplified, but there you have it.
