A man returning to Canada from Liberia is seriously ill in hospital after experiencing symptoms consistent with the Ebola virus that has killed dozens in Guinea, health officials have said.

The man has been placed in solitary confinement pending the expected results on Tuesday of tests on his condition. His family are in quarantine in Saskatchewan province, the local health ministry said in a statement.

"A diagnosis has not yet been confirmed. Measures have been taken to isolate the patient to ensure the illness is not transmitted," the ministry said.

Public health officials earlier sought to contain people's concerns, saying the risk to the public was low and noting that an investigation into the case's circumstances was under way.

“...People want a horror story, this one qualifies....”

No, they want MAKE BELIEVE horror stories... the kind you laugh about afterwards.

This one makes “The Walking Dead” look like a picnic, because unlike that fictional nightmare scenario, this is a TRUE nightmare, and CAN happen - and has already happened in Africa.

I have read a lot of books, but I have never forgotten this one. When someone mentions ebola, I get worried. People can travel around so quickly anymore, keeping it from spreading would be almost impossible.

Horrible way to suffer and die.

I listened to the Hot Zone on books-on-tape. Loved it.

Same here, friend.

“Andromeda Strain” was another one that nagged at me, and that was just fiction.

Just got home! Oh, thank God. However, we still don’t know what he has yet. But, it isn’t ebola.

Whatever it is, he’s still up that old proverbial creek without a paddle...

“Lets just say I hope she is wrong because I have a young family”

I’ll say. But since she was one of the first, and maybe the very first, to accurately predict where Ebola is hiding between outbreaks we can’t easily dismiss her. IIRC Mother Abigail was predicting that an airborne AIDs is a real possibility, a genetic cross of the flu and HIV. I think that’s what she predicted could be the next great plague.

Canada’s health ministry had feared the virus may have crossed continents after a man was hospitalised with symptoms consistent with Ebola infection after returning from Liberia.

But a spokesman for Canadian Health Minister Rona Ambrose told AFP on Tuesday tests on the patient had proved negative.

As Pogo might have said, “I hope this means that it ain’t all what it might be.” Do we dare trust the Canadian Health Minister?

Because of my research specialty, I’ve been asked many times if I have read that book.

I skimmed through a bit of it. It’s too wordy, too much dramatization. I prefer to not have to wade through hundreds of words to find out what happened. I can find out in more detail and faster by reading medical journals.

If you are interested in Ebola virus, there was a good documentary made about the outbreak in Kikwit, DRC. No dramatization, just straight up facts—it’s very good and really shows the human side of such an outbreak.

yeah, it’s definitely got the drama thing going... but that’s what made it a best seller. And in the process of it’s being that popular, I think it educated a lot of folks who otherwise wouldn’t have paying attention. Sometimes, to inform folks, you have to first keep their attention.

And I think that particular book grabbed people by the shoulders and said shook them up, saying “Look - this crap CAN happen, and it can happen faster than you think, without warning.”

I’ll look for that documentary, too; if you have a link to it that would be great. I appreciate you letting me know about it.

I do find this subject fascinating. The virulence of these types of diseases is pretty terrifying.

“Kikwit DRC” - is that the Congo?

Yes, sorry for not spelling that out. DRC = Democratic Republic of the Congo.

You may be able to find the documentary on youtube. I found it very interesting, since it put a real human face on the tragedy. I also found it interesting that some of those uneducated Congolese asked questions that were a lot more intelligent than some supposedly educated Americans can manage.
