It seems the words of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warning that the world stands on the brink of conflict, the consequences of which are not foreseen... Not everyone in Europe is aware of this situation," are a little more real than some (US equity buyers) might suspect. As The Week's Crispin Black reports, at least 7,000 Polish workers in Europe have received call-up papers as army reservists in the last few weeks. Polish authorities dismiss it as "routine" but the men note this has never happened before.
As The Week's Crispin Black goes on to note,
At least 7,000 reservists have been recalled to the colours for immediate exercises lasting between 10 and 30 days.
Theyre told by the Polish authorities that the call-ups are routine: but the men say they havent been asked before and theyre well aware of the growing alarm in Warsaw at President Putins aggression.
Three weeks ago, their Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, called a press

The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
If history is any guide, Russia won’t need to invade Poland, the west will simply give it to them, along with Eastern Europe and half of Germany.
as my granddaddy would have said...
“oh Hell, here we go again.”
Won’t the Balkans be first?
Party Like It's 1939.
I would advise all former soviet nations that do not want to be annexed, to adopt the Swiss model of civilian armament and put thousands of rifles into the hands of their citizens.
Poland could last 12 hours at full readiness. Do you understand air assault. This is such a joke!! And obammy is doing march madness thump thump brackets and actually cares about thump thump like it means something.
Poland is much closer to the Muscovites.
Let’s party like its 1920...
Yes, that was a much better party.
You mean the Baltic states? The geographically challenged Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia.
Good God people, Putin isn’t going to invade Poland.
That is the best photo I have seen in weeks!
Plus 37,500,000 others with every rifle, shotgun, molotov cocktail and rotten fruit they could muster to fight the Russians.
On a brighter note Putin is helping Ukraine and Poland to become closer
friends. Poland does NOT want a larger border with Russia...
Party like it’s 1939 again!
Yes, Ukraine and Poland must work together this time.
I remember you. In 1939 you told us "Good God people, Stalin isnt going to invade Poland."
Time yet to pull all cash, in small bills and coin, out of banks?
If poland goes to assist Ukraine, and their troops are attacked in Ukrainian or Russian territory, can Poland invoke Article V of the NATO charter?
Are France and Great Britain coming to Poland’s aid or will this be a Sitzkrieg again?
Was it patton who said that we’ll have to fight the Russkies eventually? We have been so naive about Russia.
Perhaps not. But I can understand perfectly if the Poles would prefer not to take our word on it.
we should have pushed them back to their borders in WW2, the murderers
We should have finished them off after World War II.
Mark this down:
There will be a Rearmament Bill out of the Bundestag before the end of the year.
Europe needs the Wehrmacht back in the worst way. The Bundeswehr they’ve got is okay, but won’t cut it.
They won’t call it the Wehrmacht, of course, but everyone will know what it is.
Yeah, definitely not Crimea or Kiev either.
First you need to find some young men in Germany willing to
take on the role. From what I saw on my last trip, the young generation care more about their hair-dos.
At least Poland would put up a fight; we know that much.
You never now what young people are capable of until they are called to do something.
They like to wait until AFTER Poland is under the yoke until they want to do something.
Thanks to Hitler’s antics, we were allies with them.
I believe you’re right that Putin has figured out how to increase defense spending in Europe. Scare the crap out of everyone. It’s absolutely clear to me that while many posters on this site see Putin as benign; they do not give Putin a pass on this one. As someone who lives in Europe, I can tell you this action in Crimea was a big wake up call.
Gather and united we will defeat our enemy!”
Prayers for Poland!
With a weak leader, like Obama, who might want this as well, anything can happen.
I hope it doesn’t come to that, but there is a joke in Poland.
Q: If Germany and Russia both attack Poland, who do we kill first?
A: Germany. Business before pleasure.
In Estonia we have a system modeled after Finland. In addition to professional military getting experience in Iraq and Afghanistan also every male goes through military training and there are thousands of secret weapons caches in the forests.
Is NATO still operational? NATO used to be the best defense club in the world. Every member was backed by the US and under the American nuclear umbrella.
NATO started to fall apart when Clinton was president. I seem to remember a NATO vs Serbia war. I am still waiting to hear which NATO country was attacked to justify bombing Serbia. It was at that point that NATO started to lose its effectiveness.
The next blow was 9/11. Except for a few notable exceptions (Canada, UK, Germany to an extent) NATO did not immediately spring to America's defense. The only NATO members who fought in Afghanistan (Afghanistan was behind 9/11) were the US, the UK, and Canada.
Add the fact that, under Obama, America's adherence to defense treaties is extremely suspect, and what is left of NATO?
You are wrong!
In alphabetical order: Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Lativa, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States.
US: 1750-2155 deaths, 330,000,000 people
UK: 448/63 million
Canada: 157/33 million
The back of my envelope says the UK took the highest ratio of deaths to population. US and Canada were next in line. For comparison Germany, with 80 million people, took 57 killed. Far less than the UK with 63 million people. Either the Germans were highly skilled at not getting killed, or they were not involved in heavy combat like the other three countries cited.
Remember for most of these countries ISAF stood for I Saw Americans Fight.
That was the only time NATO forces were actually used in combat operation on a request of one of the members, so keep your trap shut.
