, Mississippi – U.S. Senator Thad Cochran has announced that he has been endorsed for reelection by the National Rifle Association (NRA).

“The Second Amendment is a pillar of freedom upon which our great nation was built,” Senator Cochran said. “My pledge to the people of Mississippi is to continue supporting our gun rights, and to keep fighting any efforts that infringe on our Constitutional right to bear arms. I am honored by the support of the National Rifle Association and I appreciate their support of my campaign.”

Chris Cox, Chairman of the NRA, cited Cochran’s “A+” rating from the organization, stating that highest rating is, “Reserved for legislators not only with an excellent voting record on all critical NRA issues, but who has also made a vigorous effort to promote and defend the Second Amendment.”

Cox also noted Senator Cochran’s seniority and influence on the Appropriations Committee as a valuable tool in the fight against the Obama Administration’s gun control agenda:

“You prevented taxpayer funds from being used for gun control and anti-gun studies, while also cutting red tape for law abiding gun owners adversely impacted by arbitrary policies put in place by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms,” said Cox.

The NRA is VERY good at that one thing - bringing a lot of weight to the 2nd Amendment fight “while often abrogating the efforts of other groups who oppose those same candidates who then turn around and stab both the goals of the NRA and the other constitutionalists in the political back”. Period.

There, fixed it for you. You can spell nuclear option, can’t you?

“Did that legislation pass?”

No it didn’t, in large part due to the NRA’s efforts. Thad Cochran is one of the types that help Reid get such odious bills through cloture. They should just refrain from endorsing people.

Is that Manchin?
At that time he had voted consistently pro-gun - I know that had changed, and now I don't think you'll see them give him an "A" rating.
WE know that a Demoncrat is a natural liar, but that's another discussion.

Scorecard vs endorsements...agree with the scorecard approach...

Though, I know some people (inlaws) that put a great deal of stock into NRA endorsements...I assume they are not alone, and the candidates know this...It’s one tool the NRA can use to hammer candidates/lawmakers when they need to.

"Then NRA helped Reid get reelected, then he pushed anti-gun legislation."

You may think them fools, but they are at any rate consistent - if a Pol is pro-gun he can expect the NRA to support him, as soon as they double-cross, then the support stops.

"The NRA is also very good at sending out renewal notices...."

Oh, stop. They're running a business - I re-up two months before it expires - "Rifleman" is a great magazine.

That is Manchin, and his "pro-gun" record was weak, and he very predictably stabbed gun-owners in the back.

NRA should not endorse democrats.

Firearms. We recognize that the individual right to bear arms is an important part of the American tradition, and we will preserve Americans' Second Amendment right to own and use firearms. We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation. We understand the terrible consequences of gun violence; it serves as a reminder that life is fragile, and our time here is limited and precious. We believe in an honest, open national conversation about firearms. We can focus on effective enforcement of existing laws, especially strengthening our background check system, and we can work together to enact commonsense improvements—like reinstating the assault weapons ban and closing the gun show loophole—so that guns do not fall into the hands of those irresponsible, law-breaking few.

NO democrat is to be trusted on this topic. Not a single one. Their written, published party platform is explicit tyranny. You see it before you, in black and white, straight from the horse's orifice. Joe Manchin did exactly as his party platform required. For NRA not to expect this, for NRA to endorse him ... TWICE ... is completely inexcusable.

"You can spell nuclear option, can’t you?"

Can you follow one train of thought?
I'm not an NRA cheerleader, I'm just explaining why they do what they do - it's not really confusing, unless you can't follow along.

I have no problem with the NRA trying to get members to renew a mere two months before the expiration of their membership. However, the NRA's standard practice is to send renewal notices with a new membership card a year or two ahead of the expiration date. For example, my current three year membership expires in March, 2015. Yet, in January, 2013 and again in January, 2014, I received multiple mailings from the NRA telling me that my membership was about to expire and urging me to renew ASAP. Indeed, the NRA has pulled this renewal stunt for as long as I can remember. Although I am sharp enough not to fall for this crap, I can assure you that there are many elderly people and people who are just too busy to notice who fall victim to this scheme.

The GOA website gives Cochran an “A” so I’m pleasantly surprised that they endorsed McDaniel.

The NRA almost always endorses the incumbent unless they’re rabidly anti-gun. Is there any way we can get them to change this? Is there a certain group within the NRA that decides on endorsements?
