Redskins owner Snyder to create foundation for Native Americans
Washington Business Journal ^ | 3/25/2014 | Bob Niedt

Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder has faced  intense criticism that the name of his National Football League team is insensitive to Native Americans. He is now responding. In a letter published on the Washington Redskins' website, Snyder pledged Monday he would create a foundation aimed at helping Native Americans.

Since last season, debate has surrounded the Redskins name; Oneida Indian Nation officials call the name offensive and a racial slur. Several publications have stopped using the word "Redskins" and even President Obama has chimed in on what he would do if he were Snyder.

In a letter addressed to the Redskins Nation Monday, Snyder said he has traveled to 26 tribal reservations during the past four months "[listening and learning] first-hand about the views, attitudes and experiences of the Tribes ... the more I heard, the more I’ve learned, and the more I saw, the more resolved I became about helping to address the challenges that plague the Native American community."

On its website, the Oneida Nation was  quick to respond. Indian Nation Representative Ray Halbritter stated, "We’re glad that after a decade of owning the Washington team, Mr. Snyder is finally interested in Native American heritage, and we are hopeful that when his team finally stands on the right side of history and changes its name, he will honor the commitments to Native Americans that he is making.”

Halbritter also said, ""We are also hopeful that in his new initiative to honor Native Americans’ struggle, Mr. Snyder makes sure people do not forget that he and his predecessor, George Preston Marshall, a famous segregationist, have made our people’s lives so much more difficult by using a racial slur as the Washington team’s name.”

He should be consistent and say he’s creating a foundation for redskins.

American Indians and redskins....hmmmm.

American Indians are NOT native to the Americas. They came from the Siberian hunter groups. That is possibly why they have the same problem with alcohol as most Oriental Asians have.

I am a native American.

If he wan't to do something for Indians, why doesn't he just say Indians?

Born and raised here, from hearty Polish stock. However, that makes ME a “native American.”

I think the term “American Indian” is not considered to be politically correct anymore. I bet that is why he didn’t say Indians.

You can’t call them Indians anymore unless you clarify which group you are referring to.

Feathers or dots.
Casinos or call centers.

All of my American Indian friends call themselves Indians. Only around Government officials and media reporters do they call themselves Native Americans.

true enough, we have to clarify if we mean American Indians or Indians from India.

I wonder if Dan Snyder gave in to liberal politically correct pressures. It’s interesting that the Indian tribe pushing hard on the Redskins name seemed unimpressed. They said they welcome this development, but look to the day when he changes the name. These pressure groups cannot be appeased. They will still be perpetually angry about this, no matter what Snyder does.

And if Snyder ever does change the name, they will then be angry about “what took so long”.

By doing so it will be interpreted as guilt. No a wise move.

I agree that the Washington Redskins team name is offensive. That is why the word “Washington” should be removed.

Landover Redskins ...

Because more NFL teams play their home games in Maryland than in New York.

“Obama has chimed in on what he would do if he were Snyder.”

The brave Obama said he would “think about changing the name” if he owned the team. He’s so strong and minces no words!!!

Synder should name the entity the “First Asian Immigrants Foundation”.

The first thing that should be done for redskins is to close the reservations. Give them the land as private property, and the mineral rights in assigned parcels by lottery.

They can’t assimilate as long as they live in poverty camps away from the rest of America.
