Walgreen To Close 76 Unprofitable Stores

Walgreen Co. on Tuesday said it plans to shutter 76 unprofitable drugstores by August as part of a plan to save $40 million to $50 million per year beginning in fiscal 2015.

The drugstore chain, the nation's largest, declined to specify the locations of the stores slated to close aside from saying they're "spread across the country."

Walgreen, based in Deerfield, IL, said it will confirm the closures in the coming months after it notifies employees.

Most stores that will close either have had other Walgreen locations open in the same area or have seen real estate values decline since they've opened, the company said.

They’ve been expanding like crazy in my county.

Reminds me of the Grant’s department stores in the 1970’s.

Those who fail to learn from the past....

“Walgreen Chief Executive Greg Wasson said the move affects less than 1 percent of its locations...”

MY WALGREENS IS JUST ACROSS THE STREET FROM MY HOUSE! IF THEY CLOSE MY WALGREENS, I WILL SURELY DIE!

If they close, that would send me several miles away to another one. Damn, don't close my Walgreens. Hope, hope, hope, hope.

They opened a new store in my home town only a few years ago. I have noticed their prices are very high except for sales which are sometimes pretty good.

I have now forgotten why but I am boycotting them for one of their political decisions. I really can’t remember but I can distinctly recall saying I would never shop there again and I haven’t.

76 closings out of a total of 8,678 stores, your odds are pretty good.

I bet most of these are in urban non-gentrified areas.

“I hope my nearest Walgreens is one that will close. Horribly run store”

Sorry yours is bad. Mine is excellent and very busy but the employees are really nice and pharmacists are, too. Lines are never very long, if main line has several there, the person in cosmetics will take people to check out.

I am a regular there for meds and minor groceries (and cigs, don’t tell anyone, okay) since it is just across the street from me - saves me from going to grocery and being in a line for just a few things. My meds are so set up with this store and it’s so close, I would hate it if they close.

If they aren’t ready to tell us WHICH STORES ARE CLOSING, they shouldn’t bother with the story.

When Rite-Aid closed some stores they even closed some buildings built but never occupied. Specialty Sports & Supply, one of the largest gun shops in the country, now occupies one of those buildings.

Next time I go across street to there, will ask the manager because I really, really, do not want that store closed. I’d like to know it now if they are on the closure list.

There are three Walgreens within five minutes of my house. I wonder if any are on the list.

Think of all those Walgreens $9.50/hr “slaves” who now have more free time for artistic pursuits and only 99 weeks of collecting welf... uhh “unemployment” checks.

Close em all down...who cares? Their prices, along with Rite-Aid and CVS are outrageous.

I do my shopping at Walmart, K-Mart, Costco, and dollar stores.

Go price a can of dog food in your local drugstore.

Y’know, come to think of it, that kidnapping/shooting/standoff/perpkilling that took place in GR a few years ago started about two blocks from those pharmacies.

Walgreens came into the small town I live in about 2 years ago. We already had a WalMart, A RiteAid, and a small local pharmacy. They schmoozed the owner of some prime real estate where a popular diner had been for 60 years. The owner caved and leased the property and the diner was torn down. Walgreens went up and I swear, there is never more than 1 or 2 cars in that parking lot at any time on any day. I’m guessing this one will close.

The ones around here seem to do OK....but certain ones are 24-hour and I wonder if that will change.

I figured being open around the clock was a loss leader; they figured that the good will from being open at all hours would increase customer loyalty....maybe it has, maybe it hasn’t.

The Walgreens at 51st and Broadway in Oakland has gotten held up.

Some of the ugliest architecture in Berkeley has a Walgreens name on it. One store was so ugly, it closed and relocated to the vacant (former) JC Penney across the street.
