Ukraine sacks defence minister over Crimea

Ukraine's parliament sacked the crisis-hit country's besieged defence minister Tuesday after his forces began a humiliating withdrawal from Crimea without firing a shot against Russian forces who claimed the Black Sea peninsula.

Crimea's effective loss -- though recognised by no Western power -- has dealt a heavy psychological blow to many Ukrainians who have already spent the past years mired in corruption and economic malaise.

Ukraine's ground commanders in Crimea had complained bitterly of confusion among the top brass in Kiev since Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision on March 1 to seek the right to use force against his neighbour in response to last month's fall in Kiev of a pro-Kremlin regime.

Some 228 deputies in the 450-seat Verkhovna Rada parliament supported Igor Tenyukh's dismissal after the acting defence minister tendered his resignation in an emotional address broadcast live to the nation of 46 million people.

(snip)

Tenyukh also admitted that 14,500 of Ukraine's 18,800 soldiers in Crimea had informed their superiors they would prefer to remain on the peninsula as part of the Russian military -- a massive majority that underscores the demoralised state of Kiev's force.

I had thought there was some kind of deep strategy involved. Now it looks like the guy has had his numbered Swiss account fattened considerably by the Russian government. Well-played.

Almost 15,000 of the 18,000 Ukrainian troops stayed in Crimea.

I read that about 80% of Ukraine’s armed forces were loyal to Yanukovich and not the neo-Nazis who seized power in Kiev.

These numbers bear that out.

This is why the regime is now handing out guns and APC’s to West Ukrainians who are willing to fight for the regime.

That high a level of troop defection should be headline news in the West, but it isn’t.

“That high a level of troop defection should be headline news in the West, but it isn’t.”

It says a LOT about what has been going on in Ukraine, for a while. People don’t make that kind of decision lightly.

And remember, this isn’t something that just came up overnight. The corruption in Ukraine has been on a scale that would make a Russian Oligarch blush for some time now.

Lots of Soviet apologists on Freerepublic these days. I guess 8 million starved Ukranians wasn’t enough to convince them of the “benevolence” of Ukraine’s Russian masters.

It pays to actually read the article before commenting doesn't it?

Those responsible for sacking the people who have just been sacked, have been sacked.
