That is why a la carte will never be an option. There is little incentives for the providers to do it. They loose ad revenue (because there are channels few would buy, and therefore fewer adds).

Ah...but they can. And that's what's terrifying the "cable TV" industry: lots of "cord cutting" as people discover that Netflix, Hulu, iTunes, Google Play, Amazon Instant, YouTube, podcasts, etc provide vast on-demand content without having to pay thru the nose for ad-driven limited-choice drivel.

The real killer will be when a real news organization (focused on facts, not flippant bias) provides a video stream thru the aforementioned outlets & devices.
