The House Republicans who claim they support immigration reform now have the opportunity not just to talk the immigration talk but to actually walk the walk.
Today, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi introduced a discharge petition that, if the handful of Republicans who in the past have said they support immigration reform sign on to, would force an up or down vote on the bipartisan immigration reform bill that passed the Senate last June 68-32. Since then, House Republican leaders have bottled up the measure.
AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka applauded the move and said:
House Republicans have made a partisan decision not to allow that bill a single up or down vote. Leader Pelosi and other fighters for immigration reform have recognized that the 'discharge petition' is just a fancy term for basic fairness: Members of Congress should vote on the bipartisan Senate immigration bill.
A discharge petition requires the signatures of 218 House members to bring a bill to the floor, meaning it would take just a small group of Republicans to push the petition to the 218 mark. Last week Trumka announced that the labor movement is activating all state and local federation leaders across the country in support of the discharge effort.
If the Republican Party is willing to move past nativism, said Trumka, there will soon be a vote on a bill supported by nearly every element of civil society, from labor to business and from policy wonks to the faith community. But he added:
If not, the electoral repercussions will be heard not only in 2014, but in election cycles for years to come.
He also said that since the Senate vote, America has suffered more than 250,000 deportations, thanks to the lack of House action on immigration reform.
As we campaign across the country to end Republican stalling, we will continue to push the administration to take broad executive action to relieve the ongoing deportation crisis for millions of workers.
So this already failed?
Was about to say if it does go through a bunch of rinos would get the boot come fall.
It failed.
Nativism? Now I’ve heard everything.
Oh, and Trumka, that would be Fuhrer Pelousy to you.
Yeah, right. I only wish. If that is the case the Republicans should stall for another ten years and a good part of the illegal immigration problem would be solved.
If republican were smart they would now come back with a Bill to repeal obamacare...put the dems on the hot seat.
I know they have tried 40 times before, but go for 41,42,43 and on, continually reinforce the dems foul record.
I am Oz. The great and powerful,Who are you,Who are you?
It failed? ...well good.
Yes,it failed.
Don’t think much about trumpka, waste of my time.
He also said that since the Senate vote, America has suffered more than 250,000 deportations, thanks to the lack of House action on immigration reform.
We need to have ten times that number of deportations, for a good start. But I’ve heard that even these pi** poor numbers of deportations are exaggerated.
Excellent.
....Ha...Enjoy the suck Nancy...
LOL! B^)
