Autism Diagnoses Surge by 30 Percent in Kids, CDC Reports
NBC News ^ | 03/27/2014 | Maggie Fox

Posted on 03/27/2014 12:44:21 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

e latest look at autism in the U.S. shows a startling 30 percent jump among 8-year-olds diagnosed with the disorder in a two-year period, to one in every 68 children.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which did the survey, says the numbers almost certainly reflect more awareness and diagnosis of kids who would have been missed in years past. The new estimate for 2010 was a jump from one in 88 children in 2008, the last year for which numbers had been available.

“The number of children diagnosed with autism continues to rise,” the agency’s Dr. Coleen Boyle told reporters.

But the CDC noted that the numbers vary greatly from state to state, and it did not use a nationally representative sample, but a look at groups of children in 11 states.

“The number of children identified with ASD (autism spectrum disorder) ranged from 1 in 175 children in Alabama to 1 in 45 children in New Jersey,” CDC says in its report, based on a survey taken in 2010. The numbers from 2008 were first reported in 2012.

This would work out to about 1.2 million children under 18, Boyle says.

Dr. Max Wiznitzer, a child neurologist at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, who was not involved in the study, said he believed the numbers, but thought they reflected a rise in diagnosis, not "the true prevalence of autism."

“I'm not convinced that the true numbers of autism are rising, rising, rising every time we survey them,” Wiznitzer told NBC News in an interview.

“Over time, more children are being identified,” agreed Dr. Lisa Shulman, a specialist in autism at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University in New York.

We should identify the autistic kids that are savants and show them the data. Maybe they could find the cause. Sort of like Rainman.

No. The liberals wanted to create a super smart race of people who can be exploited for profit that can be herded like sheeple with no resistance. They doped the population with genetic enhancing additives in fifferent good products and drinks so they can prouce a race of hybrid freaks with super powers. You know like in the Avengers and X-Men. This is completely possible in the mind of a liberal and would be “cool”..../s

I'm going with 'follow the money'.

Dems 'reward' their side with cash (from the public coffers) and perverse incentives (from hell), and good press of the pity party type.

This little scam rewards several dem victim groups: teachers, educators, parents who collect from the government and want MORE stuff... and as a bonus, it rewards 'researchers' who probably are as competent as their 'the world's going to end' hysterics of the global warming type.

They have now painted autism with a broad brush...inattentiveness is now autism. Not looking someone in the eye when the kid talks to someone is autism.

My friend's son just went through this. After a year, the parents finally told the school that the school that they are a bunch of nuts.

Look, there are real people with Autism. I know that for a fact... and my heart goes out to those families... But when liberals get involved the numbers swell and the good we all want to do to help those in need becomes a tool for democrats to abuse the system.

You know that...

The original disability laws had to do with helping the blind... Who could object to that? What kind of monster wouldn't want to help the blind?

What are we left with? A third of the adults in Detroit “disabled”? And someone justifiably asking me if I object to giving a blind child help - who's mother has died and who lives with her only relative - a grandmother who fought in Vietnam and has a purple heart?

I’m ASD(Aspergers). We were just never diagnosed when I was a kid. We had full-blown autistic kids but they were sometimes kept out of school.
Many of us just grew out of it although it still comes back. I work in an office full of IT types who only talk to their shoes. We have one guy on the hall who won’t speak at all.

Diagnoses surge when they start labeling kids in the Aspergers range.

My theory on Aspergers is television. Too much stimulation too early. I won’t even watch TV anymore.

Did you even read the article? It appears Dr. Max Wiznitzer agrees with me... That said, people who really are dealing with an autistic child are in my prayers... and I wish there was a way to assist these people - or better to find a cure... But our heart felt concerns are only fodder for democrats to reward their voters... and you must know that...

I’m so sorry for your family. I applaud your grandparent rant!

Of course, the families don’t get any money for children with autism. The ones who get the money are the local school districts (if they’re lucky) which hopefully provide the special learning opportunities for these kids.

I say “hopefully” because at the present time, our school district, the 2nd largest in our state, at this time just “mainstreams” the kids. Talk about setting them up to fail!

Prayers for your family. I hope you get to enjoy the sound of your grandson chatting soon!

I don’t believe the good doctor said anything about scamming taxpayers out of money. What he said was that diagnoses were rising.

A lot of ignorant people on here. Our family hasn’t received a lick of assistance.

Also, higher functioning folk on the spectrum don’t want to be “cured”. I speak from experience. I remember a day when people would actually go and read about things that they were newly exposed to instead of throwing out ignorant barbs.

I am thankful that my grand son has 2 great parents that love him very much. Things are hard with my daughter in law being disabled. I am glad my husband and I live next to them so that we can give them a short break every evening although it is exhausting trying to keep up with a 3 year old that is as tall and weighs as much as a 6 year old, especially after working all day. But he is a happy child and a joy to be around.

I always cringe when the subject of autism comes up at Freerepublic.

Many here just think everything is political ...but sometimes it just isn’t.

We have a 12 year old son with high functioning autism. Yes, he’s normal in many respects, but he will likely always live with us and will always need our help.

I may not always be here ....then what?

We don’t get a single penny of assistance from the government, family, or anyone. I have gone back to school to get a masters so I can get a better job and work harder until I drop where I stand so that we will have money, not just for his treatments, but for HIM — to buy him a home of his own, to leave him something when we’re gone. He will never get the chance to fully use his intelligence and abilities, because, well, with autism, the wiring is in place, but it’s all — just sort of disconnected.

I’m sick of the stats, and the conjecture. I just want someone to figure out what has caused this for so many families to have to endure.

My son is a wonderful, healthy handsome strapping young man with autism. He will never probably really have it in him to take care of a wife, a family a home, or his country.

God only knows what/who he could have been ...God only knows how many young men we have lost to this. It’s time to stop the judgmental political crap and solve the problem!

One disturbing thing I see is parents entertaining their ASD kids with computers/tablets/game systems. Sure it keeps the kid out of trouble but you are doing what we call “Feeding the Beast”. High impact stimulation on a brain that is already firing a mile a minute anyway. You can lock me in a dark closet for hours and I can still entertain myself. My brother did it all the time.

My saving grace was that I was a voracious reader, which was a good low-impact brain exercise.

Some might be cured by prying them away from “Autism Professionals” and letting them be kids again.

I’m sure that I would have been diagnosed as ADD in the sixth grade, if that had been invented way back then. Hang, if they’d had Ritalin and dosed me up enough, I might have made it all the way to “autism”.

Thankfully, my teacher, Mrs. Mullaly, told my parents that she did not know whether to keep me back a year, or recommend me for advanced placement in the 7th grade.

AP it was. THANK YOU, Mrs. Mullaly!

(No disrespect meant to those with family members or friends who are truly affected with autism. My problem is with the sliding scale for diagnosis. The more federal money that pours into the problem, the broader the definition of autism becomes.)

One day they will find out that regardless of the Electrolyte content, Brawndo is not what plants crave.

I imagine that around the time they find out that they need to water crops with water (like out the toilet), that soybeans, which are an ingredient in practically EVERY commercially prepackaged food in one form or another is NOT food, but a dangerous toxin.

But Brawndo’s got electrolytes...

Yes, I have been reading the articles since this morning. It’s horrible when freepers think that parents are just in it for the money.

I never said I completely agree that the numbers are rising as fast as some people say. I just remember all the comments in the past where freepers claim parents tell their children to act “crazy”, so they can get a government check. Well they is no check just incredible expenses. and worry about what will happen when we are all dead. Will Orion be loved and treated well or will he be shoved in some group home and abused?

Don’t let some cynical comments and/or humor discourage you from FR. Their are other parents of autistic children that you might be able to help here.

I know where the poster of comment 4 is coming from. He’s relating it to the ADHD problem where there was an epidemic of ADHD diagnosed and Ritalin was being prescribed like crazy and come to find out there was an incentive for the schools to have the kids diagnosed with problems.

It was a leap in logic based in ignorance. But you just need to expect some of that on FR and not let it bother you.
