Survey: More Than 1 In 4 Car Crashes Involve Cellphone Use

STAMFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) — Texting and driving is dangerous but a new survey finds talking on a cellphone while behind the wheel may be even worse.

As WCBS 880′s Paul Murnane reported from Stamford, the National Safety Council’s annual report found 26 percent of all crashes are tied to phone use, but noted just 5 percent involved texting. play

Safety advocates are lobbying now for a total ban on driver phone use, pointing to studies that headsets do not reduce drive distraction. Some motorists said they support the idea.

“Everybody’s on a telephone. If people do cut you off, you look and they’re talking on the telephone. I think they are a problem.” a driver told Murnane. “Hands-free or not.”

I think this statistic needs further analysis.

Suppose that while driving, people are on the cell phone for 50% of that time while only causing 25% of the accidents ?

Texting( I believe) destroyed my new explorer last year and my wife spent the night in the hospital. The little Putz who rammed her in the rear as she was stopped at a light had no other excuse. He admitted he was wrong but not texting, but there was little question he was otherwise occupied. The cop at the scene winced as if in pain when I suggested the cause of the accident be check for alcohol and/or check his cell.
His insurance paid all bills but I refuse to buy another new car. I had my old Durango fixed up. I was so careful with the Explorer and all it took was one jerk otherwise occupied to total it.

Met my retired car insurance agent recently. Told him about the incident but not my suppositions as to the cause. First word out of his mouth was “Texting”.

It is an epidemic.

Yeah, well that has to be one of the top ten stupidest things I ever heard in my life.

Correlation does not equal causation. Just because somebody was talking on a phone when a crash occurred is not proof that the phone conversation caused the crash.

A man was stripping & driving in the car next to my mom and me the other day. He drove over the center median, and I looked to see what was wrong and his bare legs were up above the dash, then further down his shirt etc were off.

Even talking with a passenger takes some concentration, as I can vouch. No driver I knew who entered a hairy traffic situation wanted to keep talking until he or she was back out of it. However “phone manners” militate against this. It’s not like we commonly hear “Excuse me George, the traffic is getting hairy. Let’s talk later.”

Indeed. And let's look at it another way:

Let's assume that at any given time, 1/8 of all drivers are talking on the phone.

(Not an unreasonable assumption these days, IMHO.)

Ergo, we should expect that approximately 1/4 of all two-car crashes would occur while one driver or the other was on the phone, regardless of whether the phone was "at fault."

Agreed, separating incidental from causal statistics is needed for good science. Hardly anybody remembers what science is any more, for all its books get thumped on by bible skeptics.

I’m sorry, but if you can’t talk/listen and drive then you can’t drive.

I can drive anything, anywhere at anytime.

I can parallel park a full sized SUV with a foot of total space in less than four moves.

Driving is about awareness. It’s physical. Talking/listening is not physical and why some people can’t do both at the same time is beyond my understanding.

Really ?

I was making a point.

And to your point about science and Books.

Can you learn to drive from a Book ?

Don't use fatality rates to analyze accident trends over time. Fatality rates decline over time for almost any type of incident or health condition simply because the quality of medical care has improved so much.

Simple accident rates are the best gauge of trends like this.

Well I have been run into three times, twice by undocumented drivers

So my survey shows that two out of three accidents are caused by illegal Aliens!

You were being perfectly illogical.

Because you can park neatly, has nothing to do with whether the average driver can talk and deal with heavy traffic. Nothing! Even Alfred E. Neumann could see that.

I once had a delivery/box truck with a serious steering issue. In order to drive it in a straight line I literally had to constantly move the wheel from the 9 o’clock position to 3 o’clock, constantly. Just to go in a straight line.

I had a vehicle like that. I changed out the steering gear (the old one was worn past adjustment), and once the steering was tight again, it took me 500 miles to learn how to drive in a straight line...
