Civil rights groups on Friday appealed last weeks federal court decision that said states can require proof of citizenship on their voter registration forms a ruling the activist groups said runs counter to Supreme Court precedent.
The judge had ruled that the federal Election Assistance Commission couldnt refuse requests by Kansas and Arizona that registration cards distributed in their states include proof of citizenship requirements.
But the activists said that imposes an illegal burden on would-be voters.
The EAC has the authority to reject the states unproven claims and unreasonable request to require more paperwork from eligible Americans who want to vote, said Sam Wercinski, executive director of the Arizona Advocacy Network.
Last weeks ruling, by Judge Eric F. Melgren, was viewed as a major boost for states rights and a setback for President Obama and other allies whod fought against stiffer checks.
The judge said the Constitution gives states the power to determine voter qualifications, and if states want to insist on proof of citizenship the election commission cannot overrule them.
The EACs nondiscretionary duty is to perform the ministerial function of updating the instructions to reflect each states laws, Judge Melgren ruled in a decision out of Kansas. The court orders the EAC to add the language requested by Arizona and Kansas to the state-specific instructions of the federal mail voter registration form immediately.

you have to have ID for everything... why are they so against having one for voting???
Hmmmmmmmmmm very suspicious...
And can someone tell me why it’s wrong to show an I.D.?
Everyone can get one.
The Left never met a hurdle too low to complain about.
because its racist or something
Because black people are not able to get ID cards
I think that is their argument, but who knows.
Let me get this straight. Blacks and Hispanics are just as capable as any White person at doing things. Right? Then you ask them to get a simple I.D. card, and it’s just too freakin’ much to ask.
I rest my case...
Apparenty, they didn't read the ruling. What Morons. ..
None had probs filling out an app for EBT cards and Section 8 housing. could durn sure get there for that!
Those who are into stealing elections are the only ones opposed to this.
The Supremes were wrong that time around - not because they are stupid but because they are treasonous. There is no legal requirement to defer to unconstitutional and treasonous precedents.
No, no! You can’t require ID for voting. It discriminates against those who want to commit voter fraud.
A mug shot is an accepted form of ID.
