Prayers for the people of SoCal.

Felt here in Cypress, Orange County. A big jolt with some rolling. I don’t know how far away I am from the epicenter. I would say maybe a 4.5-5 in my neighborhood.

Wasn’t that long but very violent shaking. Swayed for a few seconds after that.

Can we maybe change the description?

I mean it was significant, but not huge.

5.4 is not “very large”. I’ve been in after shocks bigger than that:)

Can we maybe change the description?

We are about 90 miles from it. House was moving side to side. Ceiling lamp swaying, chair swaying side to side. No shaking. It was like being on a one of those chair swings that hang on a porch.

First quake was a foreshock; this looks like the main shock? There are going to be rolling aftershocks.

Looks like a moderate southern California earthquake. It isn’t the Big One, that is for sure.

Its exciting to live through. We don’t have earthquake country here in Colorado.

My first earthquake in Southern CA was almost 4 years ago on Mothers Day. It was a 7.1+ and although I’ve been through several since, anything under a 6.0 is just background noise. :)

5.1 near La Habra (4th of the evening 3.4-5.1). I think “huge” is reserved for 7+ on the Richter. ;-) USGS: http://goo.gl/uG0MhO

Downgraded to 5.1.

From a friend near the quake: most photos fell off the walls, medicine cabinets emptied, broken glass on floor and a big crack in a wall.

Looks like it was pretty shallow, probably why it felt so strong where I am, less than five miles from the epicenter. I have experienced every Southern California quake since Sylmar, and I can’t remember one that shook as violently as this one did.

Updated at 9:56 p.m.PDT:

Preliminary data suggests Friday night’s earthquake occurred on the Puente Hills thrust fault, which stretches from the San Gabriel Valley to downtown Los Angeles and caused the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake.

Friday night’s 5.1 earthquake hit only about 2 to 3 miles underneath the surface, which means the shaking is very concentrated in a small area, officials said.

50 years ago yesterday, I survived the big one here in Alaska (9.2)

The ground shook so hard for 5 minutes that you couldn't stand up.

Nah; no problem, other than you live kind of next door to the Yellowstone super volcano (had you thought of that).
You should be OK though Goldstate, it’s supposed to be kind of quiet for a few thousand more years.
