Dwarf planet discovery hints at a hidden Super Earth in solar system
Guardian ^

Posted on 03/29/2014 1:03:08 AM PDT by chessplayer

Astronomers have increased the size of the observable solar system after spotting a 450-km wide object orbiting the sun.

The lump of ice and rock circles the sun at a greater distance than any known object, and never gets closer than 12bn kilometres – 80 times the distance from Earth to the sun.

If its size is confirmed it could qualify as a dwarf planet in the same category as Pluto.

Though exciting in its own right, the discovery raises a more tantalising prospect for many astronomers: that a "Super Earth" up to 10 times the mass of our planet orbits the sun at such a great distance that it has never been seen.

Maybe they could increase the size of my retirement fund as well.

It’s not needed. We’re doing ourselves in quite easily on our own.

No problem: Round up all our Donkeys and RINOs and send them to colonize “Nemesis” (or Super Earth). It's the only place big enough to contain their bloated egos.

Why are they calling their theoretical planet a super-Earth? I thought that name was reserved for planets habitable by humans.

Because it sounds "awesomer," and thus garners more clicks.

That theory actually wasn't a planet - it was the theory that there was another star ("Nemesis") orbiting the Sun. That theory has pretty much been discarded.

Here in the Philippines, we have quakes most every day. There have been 8 so far today, and it is only 5 PM. Most are 2.5 to 4. The big one a few months ago was an 8.
