General Motors recalls Chevrolet Cruzes, trucks and SUVs

(Reuters) - General Motors Co is recalling certain Chevrolet Cruze models for possible axle fractures, and more than 490,000 trucks and SUVs for potential transmission cooler line issues, the company said in a statement late on Friday.

These latest recalls come as the head of the country's biggest automaker, Chief Executive Mary Barra, faces Congress next week regarding who is to blame for faulty ignition switches linked to crashes and at least 12 deaths.

The GM Cruze recall targets the 2013 and 2014 1.4L turbo gasoline powered model to replace a right front axle half shaft that can fracture without warning during normal driving.

Agreed, they want to show they’re right on top of things...now.

“Agreed, they want to show they’re right on top of things...now.”

I spent years in Reliability. I can tell you they’d have known of these issues long ago. They chose not to address them earlier. I’m certain an engineer told them how much extra it would cost for each additional month. You can bet they begged off to wait for the time when it was politically okay to recall. Apparently, quite a few deaths occurred in the meantime. This has the potential to finish GM in a flurry of lawsuits. They probably feel to-big-to-fail and that Obama has their back. That may be so, but if the Whitehouse steps in to save their bacon the Democrats will take another one on the chin.

Correct, I’m sure they’ve know of this Cruze problem and the trucks and SUVs but did nothing until the ignition switch fiasco was made public and that there’d been deaths.

Now there in a catch-up mode with any problem that’s come up that they’ve ignored.

Anyone expect a fair investigation from the Government? They are (or were), after all, major stockholders in GM.

Conflict of interest?

Yes, I’m sure the media will give GM the same 24/7 scrutiny that it did to Toyota and Eric Holder will ‘shake them down’
for big bucks./s

I drove Chevies for 40 years, but gave up when my 1995 Blazer quickly became a money pit. I had brake failure on my Blazer in the first week. I subsequently bought a Mazda 3 and have had NO repairs in nearly 120,000 miles. I have replaced tires, a few headlight bulbs and a battery, but even the exhaust and brakes have yet to be touched. My Chevies typically started falling apart at 50,000 miles and it looks like the quality and reliability at GM hasn’t improved one bit.

Time to lean on Toyota again so there's a distraction.

cheers,

Well, FWIW, we just purchased our second Chevrolet Avalanche 4WD. The first one, a 2003, served us for nearly 180,000 miles (including pulling an Airstream Trailer) an the only unscheduled maintenance was to replace the 4WD encoder. My wife and I agree, it was the best vehicle we have ever owned. Hope the 2013 does as well. OTOH, the Ford Exploder we had, went through brakes, water pumps, A/C compressors and transmissions like candy.

What do you expect when the govt runs a car company. Does anyone think they can do better with health care?

Yep, they’re built on the same chassis but the drive train is totally different, this half shaft thing won’t affect the Volt.

We put 426,000 miles on a 1990 Mazda 626. Also 160K on an RX-4 wagon until the family outgrew it and 190+K on two different GLC wagons we got after they were already very used.

We have 219K on the Honda CR-V and 241K on the Subaru Outback we own now.

And, in defense of the good old USA, we have about 315K on our Ford E350 7.3 diesel.
