Worlds Iconic Landmarks To Go Dark For Earth Hour
March 29, 2014 4:59 PM
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) If you happen to notice some of New York Citys famous landmarks go dark Saturday night, dont be alarmed.
Its all a part of a global initiative to bring awareness to our impact on the Earth.
This evening, people around the world will observe Earth Hour by turning off their lights between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. local time.
Keya Chatterjee, of the World Wildlife Fund told 1010 WINS there has been major progress in conservation.
In the last 18 months there have been more solar panels installed in the United States than in the previous 30 years. So were seeing a real trend, Chatterjee said.
Those participating are asked to take the time to contemplate the Earths environment.
Earth Hour is a moment to kind of celebrate that trend and think about how we can switch the way we use electricity, Chatterjee added.
Nearly all of the worlds major landmarks and iconic buildings will also take part. Chinas Birds Nest Stadium, the Great Wall of China, the pyramids in Egypt, the Eiffel Tower, and Big Ben will all go dark at the same time.

What’s NoK going to do to celebrate every one copying them?
Let’s all burn some tires tonight.
Unless that is the only light around you, in which case be very alarmed because you are about to be mugged.
This is such BS. If liberal cities like New York really cared about consumption harming the Earth, they'd shut down most of the lights on Broadway. But that will never happen. Conservation is for the yokels, little people and country hicks who should cut back on gas and driving even though they live miles from each other.
Numbering the increase in robberies in 3 ..... 2 ..... 1 .....
I’m all in favor of caring for the environment.
But this accomplishes absolutely nothing, other than making a bunch of crazy liberals who have been brainwashed by crony-capitalist politicians feel good.
I celibrate power hour, to be thankful I’m not living in the dark ages. Turn it all on!
“In the United States, the Las Vegas strip, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the Willis Tower in Chicago, the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., the Space Needle in Seattle, and the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building in New York City are among those who will turn out the lights.”
It all seems a bit alarmist to me and may instill fear and even panic in the minds of those who are not aware of the Earth Hour. Moreover, it serves as proof that American landmarks have been co-opted by militant environmentalist luddites.
I wonder if the lights on Al Gore’s estates will go out
Turn on all the lights tonight
That’s what I love about their ‘religion’; global warming, or cooling, or change is really really really really important - up to and just short of their own platitudinous sacrifices.
Democrats live in darkness.
I’ve often wondered what the real economic consequences of such a pointless and hair-brained exercise are.
For example, the world’s oldest light bulb has been lit for 112 years. Keeping lights and electronics running is less damaging than repeatedly powering those devices on and off.
So, what are the effects of pointlessly and ineffectually shutting things off? How many lights or electronics that would have kept chugging along instead experience some kind of failure? How many new light bulbs, hard drives, and appliances will need to be replaced because some loony moonbat decided to demonstrate “ecological solidarity”?
Does the energy and materials cost to replace new lights and electronics seriously cut into the energy metaphorically saved by shutting the lights off for an hour? How many hours to you need to shut off your house lights in order to “save” enough energy and raw materials to produce a CFL lightbulb that just bit the dust because you flipped it on and off for no real reason?
I was just about to go outside and hoist my 500 watt shop light up on the roof for tonight’s show.
Power hour! Love it!
I turn on the big floodlights out front at 8:30 tonight looks like.
Ever seen “The Omega Man”? Think of that.....
It is astonishing how truly stupid ideas spread all over the globe so quickly now. It is equally astonishing how the entire world is populated with blithering touchy-feely idiots that have gained such control over sensible people. Two of America’s finest exports — stupid ideas and ignorance.
...and they would stop making movies. The “carbon footprint” of Hollywood is ENORMOUS. They’d also shut down all rich liberal playgrounds such as Aspen, Vail, and St. Moritz as well as prohibit private ownership of jets. Better yet, ban all travel beyond 50 miles of all liberal enclaves such as Beverly Hills.
Years ago, during Bush 1, a church in which we were members had a major lib as Sunday School Superintendent. She was organizing a sleep-in for the church youths in which they would spend the night in the heated parish hall, sleeping in cardboard boxes, to raise awareness for the homeless.
When she announced this in church, she was not prepared for my response..."That doesn't do one stinking thing for the homeless. Instead of a useless gesture, why don't you invite a homeless family or person to spend a night in your house and give them three hots and a cot."
Wish I had a camera to capture her expression. It would be in the dictionary next to several words: flabbergasted, lost, flummoxed and totally pissed.
Party at Pat Sajak’s house for Earth Hour. There is a password. LOL
“People who care about the Earth” are willing to turn off their lights for only 1 hour in the year?
What a bunch of Jerks!
Is Earth Day not working?
Another ritual in the Church of Man.
Count me out. Instead I’ll be attending Solemn High Mass tomorrow for Laetare Sunday.
Oh no, is that today? I’m not prepared. It rained today, so all the wood for my bonfire is waterlogged. One of my two brightest outdoor lights burned out last week, and I don’t have a replacement. Oh well, I’ll do my best to light up the sky, and burn as much electric as possible.
Reminds me of the opening skit of this classic from National Lampoon’s Radio Dinner:
Just imagine the same two libtards today talking about Earth Day.
this is the definitive earth day video
Tree hugging moonbats crying over trees
My non-political guy just looked at me and said “And how will this accomplish anything?”
Back when men were sane people like those were confined to psychiatric wards or padded cells. Then the ACLU entered the scene and had them released. We are paying the price today. See: Globull warming/climate change.
I could not stop laughing.
I know the video you’re talking about, and I’m not watching that again. Last time I pulled a rib from laughing too hard.
I was worried I would not be able to have as bright of celebration this year as last year. I had two - 90 watt halogen PAR 38’s burned out That I was going to have to wait till payday to replace. I took Mom some Pot-roast for supper a few minutes ago and she handed me a box of PAR 38 Floods and asked if I could use them. Thanks Mom I just changed them out in time for tonight’s festivities :>}
Foggy and raining in New York tonight, so most of us won’t notice if the top of the Empire State Building goes dark for an hour. As for robberies - as far as I know, all the street lights will stay on, and the subway will not be interrupted. So thankfully, this useless exercise won’t have any effect on us. But I must admiit I’m not fully prepared - have to see if I can find a spot light to aim out my window in the general direction of the Empire State Building...
More like two trends. One is the increase in taxpayer funds to subsidize the installation and the second is the increase in our electric bills to provide ongoing subsidies to the owners, a lot of that goes to Elon Musk the green subsidy billionaire.
You’ll love this one:
The plane was above the peaks of the skyscrapers when suddenly, with the abruptness of a shudder, as if the ground had parted to engulf it, the city disappeared from the face of the earth. It took them a moment to realize that the panic had reached the power stationsand that the lights of New York had gone out.In the last 18 months there have been more solar panels installed in the United States than in the previous 30 years. So were seeing a real trend, Chatterjee said.
I'm considering putting one on a storage shed because it will be cheaper than running a power line to it to run a ventilation fan and some lights.
We have been in our house 17 years but the guy who lived there before us was a wiring fool. We have flood lights all around the house with what I call the panic panel in the master closet. One swipe of the hand and our house lights up like Walmart. Lol
Ahhhh but I am not home, am on our boat so will light a candle tonight instead. Sigh
“If you happen to notice some of New York Citys famous landmarks go dark Saturday night, dont be alarmed.”
The biggest mistake that General George Washington made was not burning that New York City hellhole of Tory traitors to the ground. Since that time, NYC has grown into a nest of commies, Nazis, neo-con cowards and America-hating leftists.
I almost missed it.
I really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, look forward to this every year, and it still sneaks up on me.
It's the only day of the year when I literally have every indoor and outdoor light on my property on simultaneously, for a whole hour. Also non-motorized appliances. Except motorized or heating element appliances; that doesn't compute.
I can smile at a small pleasure for a whole hour again...
Thanks for the reminder. 7 minutes to dark time here in Florida. That gives me enough time to start the dishwasher and washing machine, put something in the microwave, and run upstairs to turn on the lights and ceiling fans.
I will be turning on all my lights especially the incandescent ones in celebration
Remember this! To fight poverty and hunger! How did it work out!
“Hands Across America was a benefit event and publicity campaign staged on Sunday, May 25, 1986 in which approximately 6.5 million people held hands in a human chain for fifteen minutes along a path across the continental United States. Many participants donated ten dollars to reserve their place in line; the proceeds were donated to local charities to fight hunger and homelessness and help those in poverty”
Lights out is just another feel good do nothing publicity stunt.
I am currently listening to Trace Adkins’ Every Light in the House is On.
LOL, I actually forgot that one! There’s even a part 2, unbelievable. Donna the Deer lady. My GF was laughing so hard when she viewed it..
The really scary part is that those people are *out there*, and they vote and breed...
