GOP Rep. Hunter slams reported proposal to ban tobacco sales on Navy bases, ships

Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter is speaking out against a reported proposal being considered by the Navy to ban the sale of tobacco products on all its bases and ships, calling it a “political decision.”

The Military Times reported Monday that Navy officials are considering removing tobacco from all retail outlets, including exchange-operated sales venues and Morale, Welfare and Recreation program outlets. Navy commissaries do not sell tobacco products.

Hunter, a Marine veteran who served two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, said in a letter to Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus he strongly opposes the ban, saying it will limit or restrict service members from purchasing legal products.

I thought we considered Prohibition a mistake?

Now it rears it’s ugly head again.

C Rations came with cigarettes. I did not (and still do not) smoke, so I was able to trade for things I wanted.

Yes, I too remember Vietnam when the only fun I got out of life for months on end was smoking cigarettes and scratching my jungle rot.

Smokers are degenerates, dispicable, stupid, polluters, worse than child molesters and should be shunned and beat down at every opportunity./s

They should also keep paying tobacco taxes.

I wasn’t a habit smoker when I was in. But still before each cruse I stocked up on some Swishers for an occasional treat from the grind. Wisely I stocked enough to pass a few around. Some things you take for granted on land become luxuries and special treats on a long cruise. The prevailing hazards I inhaled on the ship far exceeded what years of smoking could do to my lungs.

One of my favorite authors and commentator on society generally is Florence king. I searched for years (unsuccessfully) to find the complete column about smoking, without success. But here is the gist of it...

Miss [Florence] King on smoking: "It's this: I think suicide qua suicide is weak and shameful, but maybe, if I just keep smoking, I can hasten my exit from this Walpurgisnacht called America and escape the mephitic cultural collapse that Nice-Nelly conservatism is powerless to stop.

"This is probably wishful thinking in view of my family's medical history, but it points up another benefit of cigarettes we no longer hear about: consolation. Even the word is gone from the language now, but it was what came through in World War II newsreels showing weary soldiers and refugees lighting up. In their most despairing moments a cigarette was all they had, and increasingly I feel the same way."

Sadly, there’s a few on this site that are cheering this proposal.

Given the size of Free Republic, enough people post such that any subject, good or bad, will be either supported or condemned. It's inevitable.

“These MF’ers don’t even try to hide their utter contempt for the military anymore.
I cannot believe how much the NAVY has changed since I left active duty in 1993.”
**********************
When I went aboard my first ship in 1960 (fresh out of Basic to a Fletcher class destroyer) sea store cigs. were .10C a pack $1.00 a carton and we used to get under way a couple of times a year and steam out into international waters just so everyone could buy cases of cancer sticks. When I retired in the early eight's things had already started to change and not for the better. The modern Navy? I think I could only stand about 10 mins of it.

Let’s see. Tobacco is legal. It is not mentioned under the UCMJ in any way. Tobacco normally takes decades before there is any serious health effect. Those effects tend to be short lived and fatal, thus actually cheaper than paying pensions into someone’s 90’s.

But sodomy is specifically banned by the UCMJ. Sodomy is inherently dangerous. Sodomy spreads HIV and other diseases which take how long before they create very expensive health problems?

So, let’s ban tobacco and bring on the open homosexuals!

Not to mention diving on the hairy yield sign and the ol' Hershey Highway.

FGS even the Geneva Conventions have a section regarding tobacco.

As in "Prisoners of War shall have access to tobacco and tobacco products".

And these supposedly FREE men and women, who would like the opportunity to enjoy a LEGAL product.

Liberals plain suck.

If a liberal "doesn't like" something you do, he bans it.

I’m glad I got out in 1993 after 4 years. I was told my options if I stayed in and it boiled down to two more years on the worst run destroyer in the fleet. I was the last of the A gang engine men old guard who knew most of the routines and tricks. No bonus, no promotion since the rate was full, and the guy who was going to be my replacement went UA and got kicked out. The seabees were wide open and I had some construction experience. The verdict was you’re staying.

I was 22 and had no obligations so I got out.
