Less than 24 hours after the News 2 Investigative Unit aired a story about a fireman getting handcuffed during a 911 call, the State Fire Marshal's Office launched an investigation into the incident.

It happened Monday night in the 100 block of Cherry Street. According to witnesses, a firefighter rendering aid during a medical call was asked to move his fire truck. The fire truck had flashing lights turned on and was parked on the side of the street. When he refused, a New Roads Police officer handcuffed and detained the fireman.

Initially, New Roads Police Chief Kevin McDonald told News 2 the issue was resolved. Less than 24 hours later, he said his department will comply with the State Fire Marshal's investigation.

"I have tasked detectives today to begin that investigation," Deputy Chief Brant Thompson said. "They will be conducting interviews and other information concerning what is seen as a very unfortunate incident that occurred in New Roads."

(snip)

On Wednesday, New Roads Police Chief Kevin McDonald claimed the fireman made a sarcastic remark to his officer when he asked him to move his truck, which is why he was detained. McDonald reiterated that he has no plans to discipline the officer.

The New Roads Fire Chief told News 2 he didn't want to comment because he has to work closely with the town police. He did say his firefighter did everything he was supposed to do.

This incident is very similar to the one in California that happened a few weeks back:

Firefighter arrested by CHP after dispute at crash site

This fire chief in Louisiana sounds rather gutless.

Oh yeah. Most cops have common sense not to interfere with firemen and their work.

Those who don’t... wind up dead.

Oh no! he made a sarcastic comment to the officer, mothers hide your children and lock the doors, there's sarcasm on the loose! Who let this panty waist that could'nt possibly have passed a psych exam on the force? I strongly suspect nepotism being involved.

Its about pushing egos. Some cops don’t understand how incredibly dangerous the scene of a fire or a disaster can be.

Every one has to obey firefighters’ orders. They’re experienced professionals and even smart-aleck cops should defer to them.

There’s always a reason for the way fire vehicles are parked at an emergency scene.

Funny how the firefighters might move a little slower when the officer wraps that cruiser around something. My Chief would have reamed that cop's arse so bad he wouldn't have been able to sit on a barstool without sliding over it.

Another cops outta control story. Well I know I got arrested for trumped up charges like Jaywalk, fail to ID & disobey officer round of charges trying to protest a politician.I was on foot.
USC 42 Section 1983 civil rights cases are very hard to litigate as the prisoners have overused the crap out of it and created widespread cynicism. High nigh impossible to get a lawyer...it SUCKS!

Not really. The Chief doesn’t have to discipline him; all he has to do is remind the cop that the fireman is the guy who has to decide whether it’s safe to approach his wrecked cruiser so he can be pulled to safety.

the fireman made a sarcastic remark to his officer

There you have it: contempt of cop; lock him up and throw away the key any semblance of common sense.

Many years ago I knew a state trooper (former classmate) who was killed by a drunk driver crashing through an emergency call for a car fire. After that happened the policy changed such that any fire trucks on the scene were required to be parked as traffic barriers to protect emergency personnel.

I don't know who this is but this made me laugh, or cry - whose police are out of control and which will soon make the former East German communist stasi state look like Toytown

Even they, some islamic country it seems, know our police are out of control???

We are seriously in trouble in foreign policy with this bungling dingdong as president. Seriously.
