Crimea does give him the chance to squeeze Central and Eastern Europe

How so exactly? Putin already had troops there so what has changed? The pipelines in Crimea come from Ukraine, so Ukraine can cut off the pipes to Crimea just like Russia cuts off the pipes to Ukraine. Of course Russia can just build pipelines and bridges directly to Crimea but that will cost lots of money, and for what? Even the Russian troops in Moldova are closer to central and eastern Europe than the Crimea is. Putin's acts are style over substance, they are a desperate attempt to save face after his disastrous failure in Ukraine. The seizure of Crimea lets Putin sycophants say, "look Putin is strong," when actually he is just trying to cover up and hide his weakness and vulnerability.
