Semi-official South Korean news agency Yonhap reported Monday that the North had begun the drill just after noon (local time). The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) confirmed that some North Korean ordnance landed in South Korean waters, and that the South responded with fire.

The South Korean K-9 howitzers have a 24-mile (40-kilometer) range.

"Hopefully this will calm down rather quickly. The NK leadership is INSANE."

What many - even within our own diplomatic corps - fail to realize is that there are those in the world, notably the NORKs and Iranian Mullahs who actually *want* an apocalypse.

Whether it is out of a sense of "nothing left to lose" (NORK) or "prophetic fulfillment" (Iran) they are literally trying to start a nuclear conflagration.

And if they even for a moment sense that we will not retaliate, then they will.

Maybe we should call Putin and suggst trading Ukraine for South Korean security or maybe we should let both of them go. It may not be the right thing but near term it will siure save a pretty penny.

Wasn’t Europe’s rationale similar to that, when they ceded the Sudetenland [and then all of Czechoslovakia] to Hitler?

At the time France and England just didn’t want more war/expense/sacrifice. They hoped Hitler would stop at Czechoslovakia, or at most at that plus Poland. They could have opposed Hitler early on, but they thought they could appease him w a couple of countries they didn’t especially care about. It didn’t work.

South Korea, if attacked, needs to have cruise missiles knock out the NK media and communications grid, those guys are useless if they can’t have their propaganda victory. Knock down those big statues and government buildings in downtown Pyongyang and see how they spin that to their prisoners, I mean people

You sound like you know more about it than I do. I was surprised that S. Korea fired back so quickly. It would be nice if N. Korea gets the message. But in all honesty, it would be even nicer if that torture/death state got overrun. The N. Koreans have suffered long enough. It’s time for them to get a break.

I agree. You would think China would be able to add 2 and 2 and get 4. I mean if they stopped supporting NK and it falls, Korea is united but needs rebuilding, foreign troops gone within a few years, awesome trading partner right on their doorstep.

China would benefit greatly

I see little comparison between French and British leaders then and our leaders today. The experience of World War I told them America would be there at some point. We, however, are all alone and I refer only to the American people, not our leadership.

You see, the statists of the world have to do something about us because if America elects a leader in the mold of a Reagan, they know their jig would be up.

They wish to make the world safe for statism.

I’ll bet if I think about it, they pulled Kuh Ray Zee stuff under Reagan.

Hell, the Komie Chinese had no problem clipping the wing of one our P3’s and downing it under Bush.

But yeah, the message coming back would be a little different.

Problem is their patron, the Chinese, give them a certain cover for their insanity.

They need an attitude adjustment ala Team America....F.A.G.’s....

These are excellent points. If, however, you can comprehend the Red Chinese leadership’s psyche, you’re way ahead of me. Maybe they think the fall of N. Korea would cause them to lose face? I.e.: a regime they supported couldn’t make it? Your guess is probably a lot better than mine.

Not quite sure of what you’re saying. Maybe I need more caffeine?

I do see similarities, however, between what Vlad is up to and Hitler’s beginning moves. Hitler tried to cloak his land aggrandizement in rational justifications. Vlad, after he got his first chunk of the Soviet Union back, pauses to yak with Obama and others who are—or should be—nervous. He’ll go on being ‘reasonable’ as long as it suits his purpose. Plus he’s playing to liberals #1 weakness: their preference for ‘dialogue’ above all else. So Vlad will give them all the dialogue they want, while he plots his next move.

YMMV.

I want to be clear....if North Korea continues this aggressive posture, we are prepared to slash our troops and veterans health care, close military bases, mothball more aircraft, and furlough our entire civilian DoD workforce for the third time this year. This is not an idle threat.....we mean business.

China knows it - the problem is taking out the NK government without Seoul being destroyed in the process. NK artillery is a Sword of Damocles hanging over the city, and even a short, violent invasion of NK would still leave Kim Jong Un enough time to launch a devastating barrage southward, causing countless billions in damage and inflicting a major hit on Asia's economy - China's included.

All parties seem to be hoping for a combination of humanitarian aid and gradual economic pressure to slowly force reforms in the North, instead. Forcing the issue would probably require a first strike carpet-bombing of the areas north of the DMZ with those neutron bombs that the US no longer has. Maybe we could buy some from Israel...

If North Korea and China play their cards right, they can invade South Korea and Taiwan simultaneously. Once it is confirmed that Obama won’t take action, China can attack Japan as well while Obama explains away that China is just “a regional power”.
