MSNBC is in serious trouble
Politico ^ | 3-26-14 | Dylan Byers

This is the story of MSNBC in a nutshell: It rose to prominence on its criticism of George W. Bush, peaked during Barack Obama's historic 2008 campaign, and, by criticizing Republicans and championing liberal causes, sustained its viewership in the years that followed.

Until now.

MSNBC suffered harder loses in 2013 -- in terms of both viewership and revenue -- than either of its competitors at Fox News and CNN, according to Nielsen data featured in a new Pew Research report. Prime-time viewership declined by a staggering 24 percent (nearly twice the loss sustained by CNN and four-times that sustained by Fox News). Daytime viewership fell by 15 percent, even as it rose at both of the other networks.

On the revenue side, MSNBC was projected to decline by 2 percent, while both CNN and Fox News were projected to experience growth of 2 percent and 5 percent, respectively. MSNBC was expected to bring in $475 million in revenue: less than half what CNN will make and roughly one-quarter of what Fox News will make.

I don’t buy it.

MSNBC is part of NBC’s “gun to your head” package on all cable/satellite providers.

Comcast, the owner of NBC, goes to other cable/sat providers (DirectTV, Dish, AT&T, CableVision, etc.) and says to these companies:

“You want NBC? You want Olympic channels? You want to carry these relatively successful venues? Then you ALSO have to carry our dung bucket, MSNBC. Unless you agree to that, we won’t provide you our other fodder.”

That is how we get stuck with garbage like Al Sharpton’s show and Rachel Maddow’s madness on our systems.

If consumers could PICK, a la carte, which stations they wanted...and would pay for ONLY those stations, you’d see PMSNBC wither up like Hillary and blow away at the slightest wind...or, perhaps, it MIGHT be bankrolled by billionaire liberals....but I doubt it. They, too, want RESULTS. And MSNBC ain’t cuttin’ the mustard.

There has been talk in Canada of a la carte pricing for tv providers but so far just talk nothing concrete. You would still have to buy a basic package which would include stuff you didn’t want but everything else theoretically would be your choice. The pricing is high enough now that some are cutting the cord and dropping it all which of course is the last thing the companies want so it is a move that should come in the future if they want to survive.

Who would’ve thunk that a station that would give Al Sharpton a prominent role would face a precarious future?

That must have been at their peak in 2008.

Analysts ignore the fact that if it had NO viewers it will still exist as a subsidized propaganda arm of the Dems via GE.

That’s exactly right. A media outlet that is built on shaking its fist at the political forces in power has to change its tune if there is a change in leadership. The mantra of “it’s Bush’s fault” can only carry you for so long. Eventually, people almost forget the name of the last guy in office.

Even liberals are tiring of Obama and all MSNBC does is hype the loser. They are heading for an inevitable rendezvous with reality hopefully it will lead to a drastic change or a well deserved fatality!!!

The leftest media fall with continue unabated until they decide they want to stop carrying water for this administration.

The first leftest news organization that turns on Obama and the left aggressively will shoot to the top of the ratings for the next decade.

These numbers are probably lower now, but about a year ago ratings were the equivalent of 961 TVs in a city of 500,000 persons or 0.19% of the total.

I plead guilty for the purposes of this post but we pay more attention to them than their own audience does.

A unified, concentrated, unbroken string (say two weeks) of zero references to them, their employees or anything on their airwaves and they would tumble even further, possibly out of existence.

There is no requirement that you ever stop on that channel, however. Click past, quickly.

Exactly. And that’s why there’s so much push back on a la carte packaging. There’d probably be the networks, sports channels and maybe two dozen others channels survive. And I can’t wait ‘til it happens. (I’m assuming at some point it will for the simple fact that the streaming options are picking up so much steam - and they’ll need to do something to compete).

Prime-time viewership declined by a staggering 24 percent

From four to three, with the remaining one percent attributed to the remaining viewers not having a full complement of brain cells.
