British sniper in Afghanistan kills six Taliban with one bullet

Lance Corporal in the Coldstream Guards hit trigger switch of suicide bomber whose device then exploded, Telegraph learns

By Holly Watt, Sterga 2, Helmand province, Afghanistan

10:15PM BST 31 Mar 2014

A British sniper in Afghanistan killed six insurgents with a single bullet after hitting the trigger switch of a suicide bomber whose device then exploded, The Telegraph has learnt.

The 20-year-old marksman, a Lance Corporal in the Coldstream Guards, hit his target from 930 yards (850 metres) away, killing the suicide bomber and five others around him caught in the blast.

The incident in Kakaran in southern Afghanistan happened in December but has only now been disclosed as Britain moves towards the withdrawal of all combat soldiers by the end of the year.

Lt Col Richard Slack, commanding officer of 9/12 Royal Lancers, said the unnamed sharpshooter prevented a major attack by the Taliban, as a second suicide vest packed with 20kg (44lbs) of explosives was found nearby.

The same sniper, with his first shot on the tour of duty, killed a Taliban machine-gunner from 1,465 yards (1,340m).

Several hundred British and Afghan soldiers were carrying out an operation in December when they were engaged in a gun battle with 15 to 20 insurgents.

“The guy was wearing a vest. He was identified by the sniper moving down a tree line and coming up over a ditch,” said Lt Col Slack. “He had a shawl on. It rose up and the sniper saw he had a machine gun.

“They were in contact and he was moving to a firing position. The sniper engaged him and the guy exploded. There was a pause on the radio and the sniper said.....

"The .338 Lapua Magnum (Lapua for short) has now been around for a while in the sniper community, but it does have the distinction of being the first cartridge designed specifically for sniping. The 338 Lapua was developed back in 1983 but it wasn't until the later 1990's that it gained in popularity and started to become more widely used. The cartridge was designed to arrive at 1000 meters with enough energy to penetrate 5 layers of military body armor and still make the kill. The effective range of this cartridge is over 1 mile (1609 meters) in the right shooting conditions as has been demonstrated in recent conflicts with confirmed kills in excess of 2000 meters. Realistically, 1500 meters is within the range of a trained sniper. This cartridge is based off of the .416 Rigby Case, necked down to .338 caliber, and is designed primarily as a military extreme range anti-personnel round and there really is no Law Enforcement applications, unless you need a super penetrating round for either armored vehicles or barricaded suspects. There are not a lot of rifles chambered for the .338 Lapua but the list continues to grow." http://www.snipercentral.com/338.htm

Please be smart enough to keep your name OUT of the press! As much as he may want and deserve public adulation for killing the enemy, too many modern day civilians like to root for the underdog, even if that ‘underdog’ would slit your throat as though it was a piece of hot apple pie. Maybe After Obama, and After Cameron (a real disappointment and ass kisser), we will have a better class of leadership in both areas.

It is pretty incredible what some really skilled shooters can do with the right equipment.

Here in the piney woods of NW Florida, I doubt one would ever need to shoot more than 500 yards and most would be under a hundred.

Maybe some day I hope I will get a .260 Remington, .243 or 6.5 Swedish Mauser that is unusually accurate. A .338 Lapua would be total overkill for me even in a worst case scenario.

I do have around 20 boxes of 6.5X55 Lapua Match for my old Swedish Mauser.

1 x 300 Winchester Magnum cartridge: $1.33 USD

KIA............. Six (6) Taliban: $1.33/6

Average Cost per KIA: 22 cents.

A little too pricey, should be under 10 cents. :-)

Actually I could probably get by with a .223 with a fast twist barrel for heavy bullets.

A 25-06 would be overkill for me but it is a nice cartridge.

“I do have around 20 boxes of 6.5X55 Lapua Match for my old Swedish Mauser.”

The “Swede” is a wonderful caliber, cartridge and rifle to play with.

The 6.5 MM is a great combination of sectional density and ballistic coefficient.
