Kerry wants terror chief freed in exchange for Israeli spy

Architect of Palestinian intifada, Pollard in peace-talks deal

TEL AVIV – The U.S. consideration to free convicted Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard is tied to the release from Israeli jail of Marwan Barghouti, the accused architect of the Palestinian intifada, the terror campaign that began in September 2000, according to informed diplomatic sources here.

The deal is being discussed between Secretary of State John Kerry and Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

Besides the freedom of Barghouti, the U.S. is also demanding that Israel agree to a final-status framework deal on all core issues in exchange for releasing Pollard. Core issues include the status of Jerusalem and Israeli communities in the strategic West Bank and Jordan Valley.

The diplomatic sources here said U.S. did not make any official decision on Pollard.

Barghouti is serving five life sentences plus 40 years in jail for his role in killings Israeli civilians, including allegedly planning multiple deadly suicide attacks.

Netanyahu, meanwhile, is no stranger to the Pollard affair.

Prior to the signing of the 1998 Wye River Israeli-Palestinian Accords, Netanyahu, prime minister at the time, was told by President Bill Clinton that Pollard would be released as part of a deal that also would free 750 Palestinian terrorists from Israeli prisons. Netanyahu signed off on the accords and released the terrorists, later saying the freeing of Pollard was for him the dealmaker. But Clinton reneged and kept Pollard imprisoned.

Middle East envoy Dennis Ross, a key Wye negotiator, later wrote in his book about the negotiations, “The Missing Peace,” that he cautioned Clinton against releasing Pollard, saying the Israeli spy was too important a “political bargaining chip.”

Pollard’s release “would be a huge payoff” for Israel, he wrote, “you don’t have many like it in your pocket.”

“You will need it later, don’t use it now.”

So the bargain is that a convicted terrorist and a convicted US traitor both get out of jail. I’m having trouble seeing this as a U.S. win.

I am hating the thought of the way this country is going to look with 3 more years of these anti-Americans running the place. Also the fact of the damage they are doing to us will last for generations.

EVERYTHING obama does either:
a) Weakens America/Americans
b) Distances America's allies
c) Strengthens America's enemies
d) Serves Islam
e) Harms Israel
Or some combination of the above.
I have yet to have anyone raise a single substantive counter example in several years of posting this.

My bet? "We", that is to say the equally treasonous Kerry and obama, get Barghouti released and renege on releasing Pollard.

That would be b, c, d and e...

Pretty simple:

Pollard is dying, so Obama loses nothing and Israel gains nothing.

Israel’s enemies get their terror chief back, and that makes Obama happy.

Israel is then expected to give up more territory for this grand gesture.

I guess we could all relax since America has such a shrewed negotiator handling its affairs. John “I Surrender” Kerry might be able to woo rich old widows but he is clueless when it comes to just about anything else. Kerry has been wrong about every major issue over the past 45 years.

So Pollard is released and Israel gives up more land.
What’s the benefit ?

Vietjohn, always a shekel for Israel and a talent for her enemies! He's like Ralph Williams selling a car, nothing good will come of it.

It’s not. It’s a personal win for Kerry, Secretary of Idiocy.

Let me get this straight. Kerry is negotiating to free a high value Terrorist. Divorced from any moral let alone long term considerations, this obviously can only make sense if the administration’s singular focus is to be able to politically make the claim they moved the peace process forward.

I like your list. I would break a) into two parts though.

a) Weakens the U.S. military

b) Weakens the U.S. economy

Instead of “catch and release”, let’s play a game of “release and kill”.

The Israelis have already said that Pollard would not want this.
