Tsunami strikes Chile: Live updates after massive 8.3 magnitude earthquake causes giant wave
Mirror UK ^ | 4-2-14

Posted on 04/01/2014 7:14:09 PM PDT by kingattax

A wave of more than six feet in height has hit the port of Iquique in Chile.

It is a key copper exporting port, close to the country's main copper mines.

Mining companies Codelco and BHP Billiton said that had not yet received reports of damage to mines.

Some reports claim the wave which hit the Chilean coast was as high as 7ft.

Tremours from last night’s earthquake were felt as far away as Bolivia.

When did this happen? At the link it says 2:17 a.m. Then there’s a video at 2:50 a.m. that looks like broad daylight.

A six foot wave?! That’s pretty routine around my home

This “wave” might be 100 miles wide. Think of it like a storm surge in a hurricane.

Let's say it dissipates to only 3 ft tall as it enters the Sea of Cortez, traveling north. How tall will it be as it makes landfall on the northern shores south of Mexicali?

This isn’t a wave that goes up and down. The entire ocean level seems to rise 7 feet, then it just keeps coming... and coming... and coming.

Imagine if the sea level suddenly rose by seven feet. The force can wash away an entire town and kill thousands.

A six foot tsunami wave would be more like sea level suddenly rose six feet and stayed there for hours. It doesn’t just break and then it’s over.

Apparently some of the journalists covering this earthquake don't realize that the copper mines themselves are many miles inland, and at high elevations.

That said, damage is likely from even relatively small tsunami surges in the ports along the coast. Luckily much of the coastline has significant bluffs, and is sparsely populated.

In 2010, an 8.8-magnitude quake triggered a tsunami that caused major damage in several coastal towns in central-south Chile and killed hundreds of people.

Most of the copper Mines are OPEN Pit Mines..
Iquique construction was of wooden Houses or
Mortar Based... There will be Tremendous flooding as this is a very Dry Region to north Atacama desert..

The Town of Iquigue when you arrive it has a Pungent fish smell as much canning/packaging is done their.

Those are for waves with about 20sec periods with a wave vel of about 50m/s. The tsunami 6ft wave might last 200sec with a wave vel of about 500m/s. Since the Salton Sea is below sea level, it would only take about a 10ft surge in elevation to reconnect the Indio sink to the Sea of Cortez.

More to the point... The 6 ft tsunami height is the height of the wave AT SEA. As the wave approaches shore and gets into shallower water it will build up and break several times higher than that.

Another difference is the period. Instead of a normal wave with a period of only a few seconds... A tsunami could have a period of several minutes. That is, the wave comes in, and just KEEPS coming...

Storm tide. Throws rocks on the roads, washes them out. Maybe takes out some expensive houses built on the beach and washes away all their sand.

Besides what the other commenters are telling you, an ordinary wave doesn’t move water forward with the wave (until it breaks in the very last stage, lasting seconds). The tsunami obeys the same rule, but it is ‘breaking’ the whole time it is approaching land — moving untold billions of cubic meters of water up and onto the land for minutes, at least.

Probably won’t happen though,...not to mention the swarms of human flesh eating Humboldt Squid which swarm up to the surface from unknown depths in the Northern Sea of Cortez whenever they detect human swimmers in the gulf for about 20 minutes, then disappear again without a trace. Nobody seems to ever hear again from people who go on vacation swimming down there.....If the tsunami is powerful enough to link into the Salton Sea towards Indio, even if one were lucky enough to make it through the flood,....would they evade the swarms of flesh eating squid?????....then the Africanized bee swarms come to mind......<8^0

So do we. And if you built your house between low and high tide and the water rose meters per second (like in the historic Hilo tsunami), you'd have a problem.

Okay I don't know anything about the subject, I live in Kansas. My thoughts on high tide have something to do with snorting laundry detergent.

If that’s the case, the best advise to give to swimmers would be a fifteen minute limit in the water.
