To me, "cool" does not mean "rebellious against traditional values," but being unflappable in the case of stress or opposition, being comfortable in your own skin, and having a sense of humor. In that sense, Reagan was "cool": "I paid for this mike," "There you go again," "I knew Thomas Jefferson, and you're no Thomas Jefferson," and so forth. Both Bush's were even a bit cool, as was Bill Clinton. Palin was a little too green to be cool in 2008, but I think she is in stride now. Obama definitely is not cool, nor is Harry Reid, nor is a "traditional-values" guy like John Hagee.

Humphrey Bogart was cool, Kurt Cobain was not; cool people don't kill themselves.
