WASHINGTON (AP) -- Here's more fallout from the health care law: Until now, customers could walk into an insurance office or go online to buy standard health care coverage any time of year. Not anymore.
Many people who didn't sign up during the government's open enrollment period that ended Monday will soon find it difficult or impossible to get insured this year, even if they go directly to a private company and money is no object. For some it's already too late.
With limited exceptions, insurers are refusing to sell to individuals after the enrollment period for HealthCare.gov and the state marketplaces. They will lock out the young and healthy as well as the sick or injured. Those who want to switch plans also are affected. The next wide-open chance to enroll comes in November for coverage in 2015.
It's a little-noted consequence of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, which requires nearly all Americans to be insured or pay a fine and requires insurers to accept people with health problems.
"I have people that can buy insurance, but the companies shut them down. They won't take the applications," insurance broker Steve Bobiak of Frackville, Pa., said. "We're a free country. You should be able to buy anything anytime you want."

Welcome to the brave new world.
The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
It's the only thing it's really good at.
Said the deluded resident of Fantasy Land.
"Got you, didn't we? NONE of this.
NONE applies to us, our families, or our staff."
I thought if they get sick, they can sign up.

It’s a little-noted consequence of Obama’s health care overhaul...
“If you didn’t have an open enrollment period,
you would have people who would enroll when they get sick
and dis-enroll when they get better,”
said Chris Stenrud, spokesman for insurer Kaiser Permanente.
“The only insured people would be sick people,
which would make insurance unaffordable for everyone.”

This issue has been one of the big items discussed here many times.
It is like someone at the associated press just noticed this?
They conveniently ignored it for the past several years?
AP and the other media are co-conspirators to the disaster.
They can, but only during periods of open enrollment. Open enrollment begins again in NOVEMBER.
Medicare open enrollment periods then. Then the promise that you can sign up if you get sick is another lie.
No, low information people only thought that insurance could be purchased outside of an enrollment period. If you haven't started enrollment before 3/31/14 (and don't qualify for some special enrollment period) you can't have any coverage until 1/1/15.
The new Obama insurance plan: go to the emergency room.
Okay. Your company is going belly up, it lets you go. You, the wife and 2 kids lose health insurance. How is that your fault and why would you be punished by the Government?
Guarantee you that many of those new sign ups and medicaid people will still use the emergency rooms for coughs and colds, just like they used to.
I stopped doing health insurance about 3 years ago. I still write accident and indemnity policies and medicare supplements, and dental. But mostly life insurance.
If you lose coverage for certain “events”, you are eligible for ‘special election’ and can apply for coverage outside of open enrollment.
Yes, a total fabrication.
As are most agents who write health insurance. Commissions are reduced and it forces agents out.
It’s so confusing and the threat of identity theft is so great I just stopped giving a damn. Is that bad?
