New Jersey's largest newspaper, the Star-Ledger, has announced that it will wipe out 25% of its newsroom staff with the elimination of 167 jobs, 40 of which are newsroom jobs that make up 25% of that staff. Of the Star-Ledger's current staff of 750, the only staffers being spared are among those who are unionized. Apparently existing labor contracts protected every single union member from the axe.
In 2012, the Star-Ledger endorsed Barack Obama over his Republican rival Mitt Romney for re-election as president. The editorial board based its endorsement in part on Obama's handling of the economy.
New Jersey.com reports that at the Star-Ledger "whole offices now stand vacant, attesting to tremendous loss of personnel through buyouts and earlier layoffs[.]"

The 4th estate is a 5th column.
This is what happens when you alienate about half your potential customers.
I spent a large part of my career in troubled industries and the MSM is the single dumbest industry I have ever seen. Morons from top to bottom.
Well the good for you folks is there is a boom in service sector jobs! Paper or plastic?
We freepers have really become diligent on these matters.
It’s only a matter of time before the libs in Washington will divert Stimulus or other govt monies to these operations to keep them afloat. There is so much unaccountable federal and state dollars that will be funneled under the radar to keep their MSM buddies in operation.
What goes around...
Sounds to me like this fishwrap never had a newsroom. Just another stenography pool for the DNC.
You are right, the media IS the single dumbest industry on the planet, followed closely by the entertainment industry.
LAYOFFS: NEW JERSEY'S STAR-LEDGER WIPES OUT 25% OF PROPOGANDA STAFF (Fixed it)
Which one of the media cartels owns and controls the Star-Ledger?
The print media is declining period. Young people don’t read print newspapers. The Internet is now becoming the main source of news along with TV.
Re: #11- great minds think alike!
Gannett, I think.
You don’t even really have to “go” onto the Internet anymore...
Apps like ZITE or notifications onto your phone, iPad, etc... these are things that don’t even feel like you’re on the internet.
And I personally still look at several newspapers, but they’re all digital on my iPad. Dallas Morning News, NY Times, Washington Times & Post, WSJ, and IBD.... All digital.
Who would want papers??
“You are right, the media IS the single dumbest industry on the planet, followed closely by the entertainment industry.”
In reality, you are talking about the same thing. They are both just “entertainment.”
When your idea of “news” becomes regurgitating progressive talking points, you probably don’t need as many people in the newsroom.
Why would this liberal rag need reporters? The White House and democratic
hacks write the stories. This rag just runs them as news.
This has been happening since ... well since forever. Look through any “newspaper of record”, and you'll see a lot of official government notices, and government advertising (much of it soft-core propaganda). Those ads subsidize a lot of other pages.
I worked in manufacturing firms which were trying to match foreign manufacturers in cost as well as quality for about 30 years. Our work mostly succeeded in keeping them in the game.
The MSM seems absolutely determined to destroy themselves by Pi$$ing off most of their potential readership with bad product.
I have never seen anything like this. MSM is owned by morons and run by morons.
