Mozilla CEO resignation raises free-speech issues
Associated Press ^ | Apr 4, 2014 8:23 PM EDT | Martha Mendoza

The resignation of Mozilla’s CEO amid outrage that he supported an anti-gay marriage campaign is prompting concerns about how Silicon Valley’s strongly liberal culture might quash the very openness that is at the region’s foundation. […]

“There was no interest in creating an Internet lynch mob,” OkCupid co-founder Sam Yagun, whose dating service site was among those engaged in online protest, said Friday. “I am opposed to that with every bone in my body.”

But Eich’s abrupt departure has stirred the debate over the fairness of forcing out a highly-qualified technology executive over his personal views and a single campaign contribution six years ago. And it raises questions about how far corporate leaders are allowed to go in expressing their political views.

Some are also questioning whether the episode undercuts the well-groomed image of Silicon Valley as a marketplace of ideas and diversity of thought, and whether, in this case, the tech world surrendered to political correctness enforced through a public shaming on social media. …

What about 0 and Biden? Both of those morons are on record as opposing gay marriage during the 2008 primary campaign.

I know that they've "evolved" since then but from what I've seen in this instance, it shouldn't make any difference.

They WERE opposed so It looks like they need to go.

0 and Biden need to resign..NOW!

I’ll bet that ‘resigned’ means that they paid him to go away.

It’s a shame that AP didn’t use the phrase “a pro traditional marriage” instead of “an anti-gay marriage” in the lead sentence. An unbiased news source would have done so.

The “GAY” population in this country is about 4% to 5%.

According to Gallup, it's 3.5%. But that includes bisexuals and "transgenders" as well.

I share your view also. That is exactly what he was trying to do. So why doesn’t he exclude everyone who voted in 2008 too and take his pie in the sky litmus test and go out of business?

I doubt its close to 4% - although with Hollywood constantly marketing it, it is probably rising swiftly. When I went to school they actively taught us the ridiculousness of the Mozilla dust-up - remember this? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_Farm

B as in B, S as in S. And I think it was James Taranto that said that this POS had contributed to two politicians that were against same sex marriage, including one Barack Obama.

This whole thing just makes me spitting mad.

Also, O said in his “evolution” statement that people of good will can disagree on the matter. So much for that, but of course he always was a lying POS.

Be sure that if they can force someone out for expressing traditional religious views, they can do it for economic views as well - "I believe in traditional capitalism".

I’ve stopped using Mozilla as they allowed themselves to be bullied by this crew, but OkCupid (and others) are the ringleaders of intolerance in this case. Worth letting them know.

You may be right about that. There will be a backlash, and when it does, these people will be the first to taste what they have brought upon themselves. You think what they are doing in Uganda and Russia is tough on these people, you just wait until they piss off the US population.

Were this to occur, couldn't employees have a case in a court of law?

I understand that companies have rules set in place in order that the people they pay get the job done correctly. Is there a point though where the rules go beyond reason, where rules don't have anything to do with churning out the product or service?

I would think that a company dumb enough to insist on knowing an employee's personal opinions beliefs, religion and political bent and demand that they say an oath would be an infringement on privacy.

Course I know where I work, the diversity and tolerance messages and meetings are rampant. I'm sure 75% of it is to protect the company from lawsuits and negativity.

It’s even more absurd when people got outraged and cited the writer of the Ender’s Game novel that he wrote in 2005. It’s worse than religion, which at least can forgive what you did in the past, say, five or so years ago.
