In January, a senior admiral of the Iranian navy announced he was sending two warships to the United States maritime borders in order to send a message to Washington.
Adm. Afshin Rezayee Haddad was bluffing. Tehran did indeed dispatch a task force of two rather aged warshipsonly one of them meaningfully armed.
But the Iranian navys 29th Flotilla never went anywhere near the U.S. It barely even left Irans territorial waters. And instead of sending a message to Washington, the flotilla merely skirmished with African pirates before quietly returning home.
The 29th Flotillas rather pathetic deployment continues a long, less-than-proud tradition of Iranian naval posturing. Tehran has long claimed it would sail warships into American waters.
But so far, Irans tiny, outdated fleet hasnt even managed to reach the Atlanticto say nothing of crossing that vast, stormy ocean to threaten U.S. shores.

Madagascar,...Miami,...what’s the difference????? /s
Shouldn’t we have known this then?
No, because part of keeping people under control is to continually having them feel threatened. This is just another one of unmpteen thousand dire threats we face, according to the government and its mouth-pieces on the nightly news. We can’t have reality screwing up the message.
The only people I recall treating this as a dire threat were posting here.
Being ex-Navy, I did not then, nor do I today believe there was any doubt our military advisors (certainly NOT any of odumbo’s people”) knew damn well those two rust buckets would never get here without logistical support. Those are not nuclear powered vessels and need fuel, lots of it to make such a journey from Iran to any of our eastern shores. Even if they somehow did get the needed fuel and/or supplies, there would have been a number of U.S, vessels that knew and were observing their every move. I saw no threat then nor now.
We need another showing of the Great White Fleet.
I thought one of the Iranian ships was the fuel tanker.
“only one of them meaningfully armed.”
Meaningful to the reporter, perhaps?
And who won those pirate skirmishes, anyway? “Quietly returning home” does not sound as though it went well for the Iranians ...
I can breathe a little easier this morning. Thank you for posting.
But, but, but.... What about the Iranian barge with the Scud launcher and nuke warhead with the EMP charge that will destroy life as we know it?
Do you mean after I bought all these supplies and pre-1960 electrical devices and cars I won’t be needing them?!?!
%@#%#!!!!
Good, I can fill in my fox hole at the beach.
I guess I can tell my family to come up out of the bomb shelter now.
I've always believed that the Iowa-class battleships should remain seaworthy, if only for show-the-flag purposes.
Who would refuel them for the return trip? Cuba, I guess...
Hey, that's (all together, now) RAACISSST!
AGREED!!
Iran has no experience with refueling at sea. That's not an ability you can pick up on the fly.
Nothing more impressive than a 70 year old obsolete ship.
