Posted on 04/05/2014 6:07:17 PM PDT by SoFloFreeper
A U.S. Navy warship was headed Saturday to rescue a 1-year-old girl who fell ill on a crippled sailboat that was attempting to circle the world.

It could have been prevented by parents with a little common sense.
But they may also be delivering meals to the poor folk on the boat at the same time so it is justified. That is their primary purpose!
What kind of idiot parent risk taking a 1 year old on a voyage around the world?
You should’nt take little tots on that kind of trip anyway, unless you’re running away from some Communist oppressor. I’m surprised Mom went along with it. Wait till the girls are in high school, then do it. They can help as Deck Hands on the fantail.
We must pay for ignorant selfishness of those that would take a one year old on a round-the-world sailboat ride.
I am encouraged to learn the gubmint is searching for new ways to waste my tax dollars./sarc
The boat needs to be met by Child Protective Services
Hopefully, the price tag of this rescue will make any future effort too expensive for their depleted bank account.
Yes, all people should just stay home where its nice and safe.
Idiot Parenting 101.......
Well, actually this IS part of the job of the coast guard.
The kind that shouldn’t have reproduced
I certainly wouldn't force anyone to go through that misery.
A prime example of more money than brains
what sort of idiots would take a baby on a sailboat around the world, selfish idiots
Here is a link to a video On the MS Century us rescuing some jerks at sea my wife and i missed Maui because of this its ok people are more important funny with in a month the derelict sailboat ran aground on Maui
Not saying that everyone should always just stay home. Or that we can eliminate risk entirely from life. I think people are questioning having two little kids on a sailboat in the middle of the ocean.
they don’t have proper medical supplies on board for sicknesses? they take a 1 year old on such a journey that is not a necessity?
no, but they should be handed a bill for services rendered.
It is the duty of every mariner.
The 1974 International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS Convention) obliges the
master of a ship at sea which is in a position to be able to provide assistance, on receiving information from any source that persons are in distress at sea, is bound to proceed with all speed to their assistance, if possible informing them or the search and rescue service that the ship is doing so
The 1979 International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR Convention) obliges State Parties to
ensure that assistance be provided to any person in distress at sea regardless of the nationality or status of such a person or the circumstances in which that person is found and to provide for their initial medical or other needs , and deliver them to a place of safety.
So I hope that the authorities charge this couple with child endangerment.
This morning “they” said it was a 3 year old. Is a 1 year old a toddler?
what is the back story?
what delivery were these idiots you rescued making
But not the Navy.
Interesting. So that applies to military as well as civilian vessels?
Okay, well, then I stand corrected. I sure hope the parents have to pay for the rescue.
Come on, wouldn’t any parent take a child recovering from s salmonella on a long sea voyage far from medical help, in an unseaworthy boat?
After all, they unsuccessfully tried last time while the mother was pregnant with the now sick child.
Sailing around the world is certainly not without its dangers. For the most part the dangers can be managed.
The parents didn’t call the Navy. They called the Coast Guard. Something many many other people do.
I love my kids (1, 3 and 5yo) more than life itself but there isn’t enough money on this planet to get me to circumnavigate the world with them.
Heck, it’s a Saturday at home and it feels like the longest 14 hours of my life.
The kind of people who have been raised to believe that help is always just a phone call to the government away and that they are entitled to it.
I have done a fair bit of off shore sailing and would never expect help at the press of a button. The whole idea of cruising is self reliance. If there is any reason you can think of that would cause you to call the freaking NAVY to bail you out you really should stay ashore.
Just my opinion.
I had a 1,3,and 6 year old, thirty years ago.
Hang in there.
They do grow up.
No. But we who go "Out there" should not expect to be rescued at the expense of others.
GMTA..but in this case...I dont suspect it took either of us much work to come to that conclusion.
Kids in trailers behind bicycles on city streets are one thing but circling the Globe on a sailboat with a 1 year old aboard is entirely another... unless the one year old is a Family PET!
A good many "Rescues" at sea involve frightened, uncomfortable people being removed from perfectly seaworthy boats. Bringing a sailboat alongside a large ship is what causes most of the damage. Often the boats are found still floating months later.
That guy must REALLY, REALLY, REALLY like to sail, cuz it sounds like the cruze from hell to me!
Laughing and agree with you!!
The boat was the delivery out of san diego to hilo
you mean they were delivering the sailboat itself to Hawaii?
Well I guess they effed that deal up bigtime
What about JFK JR. and all the fuss the navy went to to get his ass back from davy jones locker I think Clinton and company messed with his plane
It will pass and you will wonder where the time went, but yeah, can you imagine risking all their lives for some harebrained sailing voyage?
Funny and agree with you!!
Yes they were sailing her to hill a old weakness skipper and two day salors
Good point, though I think that had to do with a plane crash.
Heartless BS. That mentality is precisely what the younger generation associates with conservatism, and this is why they won’t vote for our side. Unbelievably cold. If a convoy of USN corpsmen passed a car accident, , should they simply pass it by and not jump in?
I hope they hug them and say ‘Greetings citizen, ,, grog?’
900 miles off the coast of Mexico?
Wholeheartedly agree. This sort of thread, in a nutshell, is exactly what people point to when they say that conservatives aren't pro-life, they are simply anti-abortion. This baby didn't ask for stupid parents, but it got them, and he/she deserves to be rescued if rescue is possible.
Either we care about the lives of innocents, or we don't. If we do care, we don't get to stop caring when babies are born.
Yup. Anyone remember the story a year or two back about the hikers out west that hit their emergency locator beacon because they were hungry and forgot their lunch?
I’m fully on board with the right of parents to be idiots with their kids, but I am also fully supportive of them paying for it.
Nothing to worry about, Obamacare will cover it.
