US Steel idles Indiana mill due to lack of ore (& climate change)

GARY, Ind. (AP) — U.S. Steel has temporarily halted steelmaking at its massive northwestern Indiana mill because the ice-covered Great Lakes have cut off its access to vital iron ore and other raw materials.

The company said in a letter to its customers that it has idled the Gary Works complex's blast furnaces and steelmaking operations "due to unforeseen and unprecedented ice conditions on the Great Lakes" after the Midwest's frigid winter, The Times of Munster reported (http://bit.ly/QMW0D4 ).

"These severe ice conditions have not occurred on the Great Lakes for more than three decades," the letter states.

Treacherous ice covering much of Lake Superior has prevented freighter ships from hauling iron ore — an essential ingredient in steelmaking — from Minnesota's Iron Range to northwestern Indiana steel mills.

Some ships have a higher priority than others.

Authorities find bodies of mother, son in flood waters

http://www.wthr.com/story/25170616/2014/04/05/conservation-officers-searching-for-two-people-in-flood-waters

GOSPORT -
Indiana Conservation Officers confirmed Saturday afternoon they had found a mother and son who disappeared beneath the flood waters of White River near Moon Road earlier that day.

The body of 5-year-old Bronson Liggett was found still in the flood waters around 4:20 p.m. His mother, 24-year-old Jana Payton, was found about 20 minutes later.

.............

Investigators said a friend of Payton’s was driving at the time. They believe she was unfamiliar with the gravel road next to the White River. The car became submerged in flood waters.

All three got on top of the car to try to escape the flood. The friend went up a nearby hill to look for help but by the time she got back, was never able to find Payton or Liggett again.

I've observed that retail outlets in Western SF have a MUCH better selection of Wet Suits than any other place I've been.

Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland and Buffalo (NY) are lame in comparison.

Our local kayak cascades have had the ice clocking the chutes melted off in the last few weeks and I've seen one set of kayakers go through.

Since I tend to use a tube with a kayak paddle, it's still way too cold for me to do any navigation (I never bought the well fitting wet suit when I had the chance).

Well, I just happened to read that one sentence in the article. Apparently, yes, they will report to work and get paid, but not have anything to do. Maybe do a bit of sweeping and tidying up, if their contracts permit it.

I put in a summer working at Youngstown Sheet & Tube in East Chicago back in the 1950s not far from there (but long since shut down). This doesn’t really surprise me. The company has less trouble and expense with the union, paying them for a few days or weeks for doing nothing, than it would have negotiating a formal shutdown, I would guess.

I worked one week in the Summer in a Wire Mill during Plant Shutdown.

We put on Space Like Suits and went into the salt baths and other (plating) tanks to scrape out the accumulated crud along with doing general cleanup of all sorts of other Plant nooks and crannies.

The guys tell me that they have cleared the Locks, but, its the ice built up (pressure ridges) that are the problem. Some ice is piled up really thick. The CG is afraid that the breakers might be stretched so far to the limit that they might fracture hulls.

On another note, the guys at the Tilden and Empire Mines say that they thought the docks at Escanaba are operating. But, that is Cliffs Natural (Formerly Cleveland Cliffs) turf and I wonder if they will divert any to US Steel since they are contracted with other steel companies.

" 62-year career"

That ain't bad. Similar to the B-52's.

Maybe we could buy a nuclear powered Russian Arctic Breaker to get the Yeoman's work done.

I think if they have multiple boats stowed aboard, they should be called Ships.

Season opens with Top Hat ceremony as Port Colborne welcomes CSL Laurentien 4/5 - Port Colborne, Ont. – She plowed through at least a metre of Lake Erie's ice, guided by the ice breaker, CCGC Samuel Risley, to arrive in Port Colborne early Friday morning, just after midnight.

Canadian Steamship Lines' CSL Laurentien docked at Lock 8 about 12:45 a.m. with Captain Jim Perkins and Chief Marcel Garant welcomed by Mayor Vance Badawey, who officiated an early morning Top Hat Ceremony postponed for a week due to the harshness of our 2013 to 2014 winter season and the tremendous ice build up on the Great Lakes.
