Oppressed by the Ivy League
wsj ^

Posted on 04/05/2014 9:21:32 PM PDT by chessplayer

Academia has been obsessed over identity politics for two generations, so there's some justice in the newest addition to the matrix of oppression: an Ivy League education, according to the Dartmouth College students who this week took over the president's office.

On Tuesday Dartmouth's finest seized the main administration building and disrupted college business. The squatters were allowed to remain until Thursday night, when the dean of the college negotiated and signed an exit settlement assuring them the non-dialogue would continue.

The demonstrators had a 72-point manifesto instructing the college to establish pre-set racial admission quotas and a mandatory ethnic studies curriculum for all students. Their other inspirations are for more "womyn or people of color" faculty; covering sex change operations on the college health plan ("we demand body and gender self-determination"); censoring the library catalog for offensive terms; and installing "gender-neutral bathrooms" in every campus facility, specifically including sports locker rooms.

We rarely sympathize with college administrators but we'll make an exception for Dartmouth President Phil Hanlon, an accomplished mathematician who for some reason took the job last year. The occupiers filmed their confrontation and uploaded the hostage video to the Web, where Mr. Hanlon can be seen agog as his charges berate him for his "micro-aggressions." Those are bias infractions that can't be identified without the right political training.

Mr. Hanlon left after an hour and told the little tyrants that he welcomed a "conversation" about their ultimatums. They responded in a statement that conversations—to be clear, talking—will lead to "further physical and emotional violence enacted against us by the racist, classist, sexist, heterosexist, transphobic, xenophobic, and ableist structures at Dartmouth." They added: "Our bodies are already on the line, in danger, and under attack."

American decadence and decline on full display. People of no real talent or accomplishment have endless expectations and demand respect and honor. The world is laughing.

If I were the college president I would:

1. Refund their tuition.

2. Expel them.

3. Go to the filing cabinet containg the applications I didn't accept that year, and replace them.

The minute the Ivies started accepting famous celebrities, it confirmed how low things had sunk.

Natalie Portman?
Claire Danes?
Brooke Shields?
Emma Watson?

These schools used to be filled with the best brains, but now it’s all about getting Harvard, the name, on the resume, not about using the resources that the university provides.

College health plans hardly cover antibiotics for strep throat. How is it going to cover sex change surgery, which is 50-100K not including hormones and cosmetic issues like shaving a male’s adam’s apple or bone structure?

Non-whites make up 27.6% of the USSA’s population. Dartmouth’s freshman class is 37% ‘people of color.’ Yet the spoiled brats call the school “White Supremacy U.” I guess the school won’t be considered non-racist until it’s student body is 100% non-white.

That’s the whole point. This is mob violence by ‘minorities’ in order to disenfranchise whites.

Sadly, formerly elite colleges have nurtured the seed that will be their demise.
Other institutions, not so inclined, will emerge supreme.

You really think they paid the tuition?

Kids do not come up with these demands. It is the professors and the professional agitators that use the students as a cover.

a mandatory ethnic studies curriculum for all students

Didn't that used to be called Western Civ I & II? Why teach failed cultures as normal? There's only one thread that gets you to modern, American driven liberty and that's Western Civilization and the flourishing of Christian religion and thought. There's no other civilization that replicates that at any time in history, including Rome. Ironically, it's Rome that is most often compared to America.

Many of the “colored” people are there by virtue virtue the right last name or being 25% American Indian (supposedly). I know one girl going to Brown who supposedly is Hispanic and she could pass for a Norwegian princess. Then again, she may well have been admitted simply on the basis of outstanding test scores, a gorgeous face and a body which looks as though it were designed by a committee of sixteen year old boys.

My nephew is going to attend Dartmouth it looks like. He was accepted at Cornell, Duke, Middlebury, and Johns Hopkins. Rejected by Harvard (his first choice)Yale, and Brown.

Dartmouth is offering the best financial aid package - basically a 50% scholarship. My brother’s oldest son is at Georgetown on a 50% scholarship. The amount of money we’re talking about is still huge. I feel for him. At least his boys are motivated. My nephew at Georgetown works two jobs to help pay his way. He’s majoring in Economics.

The kid on his way to Dartmouth is one of the best Irish Step Dancers in the country. He won the national championship when he was 13. He’s going to be a pre-med major.

My brother should be very proud. We had a funny exchange when he told me the news though. We both went to college in New England and had experiences with Dartmouth kids.

I said to my brother, “have you ever met anyone who went to Dartmouth that wasn’t a complete asshole?”

He looked down sadly and shook his head saying, “no.”

I went to school in Vt. We would run into Dartmouth kids occasionally. Your assessment is correct.

A Harvard MBA will still get you a job.

Don’t kid yourself. It’s not the education you are getting at the Ivies. It’s the address book and contact list.

That is what it’s always been about.

According to The Dartmouth Review article and the accompanying pic, fewer than 40 students took part, with 19 staying for the "sit-in".

There's only one comment on the article and it takes the majority (our) view.

I spent 16 years teaching at various colleges in and around NYC. I finally gave up trying to deal with dopes like Hanlon. It was fun while it lasted but I couldn't stand being told my freshman students had to be allowed snack time during class. I exploded at a Dean and that was the end of my career.

There are some major corporations that will now reject Ivy grads. Reasoning has something to do with being out of touch with the real world.
