When Senator Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida, delivered a speech last month outlining proposals for economic growth, his sponsor was the Jack F. Kemp Foundation, a Beltway organization set up in memory of the Republican politician who died in 2009 and has recently been cited as a hero by some of the partys most prominent figures.
Senator Rubio is one outspoken admirer. Another is Representative Paul D. Ryan, Republican of Wisconsin, who worked at Mr. Kemps think tank, Empower America, in the 1990s, and has said that Mr. Kemp was one of his principal mentors.

Any economic growth doesn’t mean squat if the borders aren’t secured and the welfare/warfare state is reined in.
Kemp lost, which is why the NYT wants his naivete repeated
“In 1990, when he was HUD secretary, the ardently pro-immigrant Kemp threatened to withhold federal funding from the city of Costa Mesa, Calif., unless it repealed laws barring social services for undocumented immigrants.”
A real fiscal conservative.
Kemp was a patriot — but he was a big government guy.
Not what America needs today.
America needs someone who will close entire Federal Handout agencies and Departments — along with the programs they administer.
Figures, Kemp was very weak and helped Dole lose.
Kemp’s choice by Dole was a bold pick at the time, but there wasn’t going to be anyone that would’ve helped. Dole needed to go nuclear on Bubba and he wouldn’t do it.
We probably should be grateful that Colin Blow didn’t get the nomination, because he probably would’ve won, and we’d have had a liberal Democrat as a GOP President and the damage he’d have inflicted would’ve been monumental.
Kemp another milk toast Republican
Why do they advise Republicans to channel the losers?
What he fully missed was the effect of culture on economic activity.
Sure. I’ll start wearing sweaters everywhere I go, talk real slow and try to remember what day of the week it is...
Got a Roth-IRA? Thank the Kemp-Roth Act of 1981.
Have you too soon forgot that it was Jack Kemp at a (R) primary debate in 1988 where Kemp flat out declared that if George HW Bush was elected "...the Reagan Revolution is dead."?
Prescient? Certainly.
"Naivete?" Hardly?
C'mon, you're from NY. You really should know better.
FReegards!
Kemp's style reminds me of Michael Steele, both apologizing for being a Republican was supposed to get minorities to become Republicans.
Al Gore - "I want to complement Mr Kemp for not being a racist like everyone else in his party."
Jack Kemp - "Thank you."
Let’s don’t and just say we did, ok???
Kemp was super, except for his support for affirmative action and shamnesty.
Seemed like he wanted to create some kind of conservative version of the welfare state, a faulty premise. I give him points for engaging minorities but his approach was flawed.
Worst debate performance, ever...Kemp vs Gore.
Bobdole’s running mate. Swell.
His performance in the Vice Presidential debate that year was atrocious! He never once challenged his opponent, and didn't really explain the positions he and Dole were taking. I was so disappointed, because I really thought he could do so much good as VP.
