Gun advocates credit new concealed carry laws for sharp drop in Chicago murder rate
The Washington Times ^ | April 5, 2014 | Phillip Swarts

Chicago police are reporting that the murder rate for the first quarter of the year is the lowest it’s been in more than 50 years, which gun advocates are attributing to a concealed carry law passed in Illinois last year.

The first three months of 2014 have seen the fewest number of homicides since 1958 — six fewer than this time in 2013, and 55 fewer than this time in 2012, The Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Gun-rights advocates argue that concealed carry laws can reduce crime and keep the population safer. The state began accepting applications for permits in January.

“The facts are every time guns have been allowed, concealed-carry has been allowed, the crime rate has gone down,” said Rep. Louie Gohmert, a Texas Republican, just months before Illinois passed the concealed carry law in July 2013.

Yeah it just passed a month ago so it must be the law already. Has nothing to do with the cold winter.

“six fewer than this time in 2013”....

Warmer weather expected this coming week. Look for the numbers to increase as the street rats come out for fresh air. (I wonder how things went the past few days in the Windy City? Haven’t heard the statistics yet.)

I’m for concealed carry, but I doubt this decreased or will decrease the homicide rate in Chitown. Most likely cold weather kept many killers indoors. They’ll make up for lost time in short order when the warm weather kicks in. However, at least now law-abiding residents will be allowed to defend themselves against the hoodlums.

I don’t believe your criticism is fair. The permits were only available for a month, but the residents were finally able to keep guns and practice with them this past six months or so.

I may not be remembering this right, but it seems to me that Chicago had severe restrictions on even having a gun in your home.

Yes they did. All the stats I’ve seen show that most Chicago murders are in the urban area. They involve blacks killing other blacks over drugs and gang turf.

Have there been any numbers released on how many people are buying guns in Chicago?

IMO we should be careful when the media starts saying things like this. The murder rate will probably go back up when the weather warms.

You’re probably right - cold weather.

On the other hand, had killings gone up, the libs would be dragging the NRA over the coals - so I don’t mind taking credit, it’s about time we start playing by their rules, instead of constantly losing.

” it’s about time we start playing by their rules, instead of constantly losing.”

I agree a change of tactics is needed.

....because none of the other winters were cold.

Y'see.

Well ya see Mr Laz, concealed carry does work to reduce crime and protect innocents but it does take time.

Time for people to get the permits and time for the crimes to occur.

According to this site which tracks the murders http://homicides.suntimes.com/suspects/ only 18 of the suspects in the last 100 murders were white. 4 of the last 100 victims were white. The rest are predominantly black with a small number of hispanics.

A map of the murders show most of them are in the inner city urban area http://homicides.suntimes.com/homicides/map/2014/

And page 16 of this report on murders by Chicago PD for 2010 shows the murder rate for summer months is higher then winter months. https://portal.chicagopolice.org/portal/page/portal/ClearPath/News/Statistical%20Reports/Murder%20Reports/MA10.pdf

but I could be wrong.

Crooks might not know this and act accordingly.

However, I do agree winter was a factor.

A big part is likely to be the cold winter, but 5,000 approved licenses were mailed out on Feb 28, with another 40,000 or so in the pipeline at the time of the article I read, and 400K expected to be issued by end of 2014.

We'll see how the second quarter's statistics are. Also, keep in mind that the average street thug may not have been keeping up with news of how many licenses were actually issued, and assuming that there were now a bunch of CCWs on the street.

I’m a big believer in the right of self-defense but we have to be careful. Our enemies will do and say anything to further their agenda. If they can discredit pro-gun people who are too willing to jump on seemingly positive information it would go a long way for them.

Also, the CCW is becoming a license to own a firearm. In many cases the person involved in these cases is at home. A license should not be needed to possess a firearm in your own home.
